As a health-conscious person, you probably rely on the products sold in stores such as Whole Foods and similar retailers that sell plenty of vitamins and supplements. You probably don’t think of anything you buy there as “toxic foods.”

But what if we told you not all of these products are safe?

Natural health activist and journalist Mike Adams has recently published an article detailing some shockingly dangerous additives that can be found even in supplements and foods labeled as healthy.

“I know this because I’ve been an investigative journalist and activist in the natural health industry for over a decade,” says Adams.

I’ve walked the floors of countless trade shows, conducted hundreds of interviews and spent tens of thousands of dollars on laboratory tests to determine what’s in these products. On top of that, I’m deep into organic product formulations and certified organic food production, serving as the supervisor of a USDA-certified organic food production and packing facility.

Here are some of the most harmful toxins contained in foods labeled as natural and healthy.

MSG Labeled as “Yeast Extract”

vitamins-and-supplementsMost of us think this well-known dangerous chemical is only added to burgers and potato chips.  However, hidden MSG (monosodium glutamate) is prevalent in supposedly healthy foods such as veggie burgers and other vegetarian products.

MSG occurs in yeast extract, so anything labeled as “yeast extract,” “autolyzed yeast extract,” “torula yeast,” “yeast hydrosylate,” or even “hydrolyzed vegetable protein” very likely contains MSG.

According to LiveStrong.com, “As with MSG, the industry claims that yeast extract is a natural substance with no harmful effects, and opponents claim it causes a variety of health problems.”

Some reported symptoms of MSG include headaches, heart palpitations, nausea, and chest pain. It has also been linked to helping the growth of cancer.

Vitamin C

That’s right, good old reliable vitamin C is on this list. Just like so many junk food companies who try to cut corners and use the least expensive food available, many natural food companies will use genetically modified corn.

Nearly all the “vitamin C” sold in vitamins across America right now is derived from GMO corn,” says Mike Adams on the Natural News website.

This includes even the supplements from Whole Foods or Amazon, and of course the ones sold in supermarkets and grocery stores. This type of vitamin C is usually labeled as “ascorbic acid.”

“Sourcing non-GMO vitamin C requires you to go outside the United States,” says Adams, “There is no existing supply chain of certified organic, non-GMO ascorbic acid available anywhere in America (at least not to my knowledge). You can’t even run batches of non-GMO ascorbic acid production in the USA because all the facilities are contaminated with residues of GM corn.”

A good alternative to taking vitamin pills is camu-camu berry powder, rose hips, or citrus fruit juice.

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is similar to glucose in that it has practically no nutritional value and passes very quickly into the bloodstream. Most of the maltodextrin used in natural products is derived from genetically modified corn.

The only way to make sure corn maltodextrin is safe is to look for the “USDA organic” label. Alternatively, there is also tapioca maltodextrin, which is also usually found in organic products.

Soy and Rice Proteins

toxic-foods“Nearly 100% of the “natural” soy proteins and rice proteins sold in the USA are extracted in China using a hexane extraction method. This is true for brown rice protein superfoods as well as the soy protein used in nearly all so-called ‘protein bars.'” says Mike Adams.

“My understanding is that hexane extraction is not allowed in certified organic proteins, so if you have a choice, go for certified organic instead of just “natural” (which means nothing anyway).”

So many of today’s popular protein bars contain soy protein. Just a few examples are Luna, Zone Perfect, Balance, and Cliff bars.

Lead and Arsenic in Chinese Supplements

toxic-foods-gingerChinese medicine holds a certain mystique in the minds of health-conscious people, and of course, it does offer many powerful remedies. Unfortunately, China also happens to be the most heavily polluted country in the world.

It appears that high levels of heavy metals such as mercury, lead and arsenic are often detected in many Chinese products, including foods, herbs, and other supplements.

“Astonishingly, many of the small and medium-sized companies that import and retail products from China conduct no metals testing whatsoever,” says Adams, “I know this as a fact because I’ve talked to people doing this.

Acrylamides

toxic-foods-chipsAcrylamides are chemicals produced as a result of cooking carbs on high heat. As something that is produced during the cooking process, they are not really considered “ingredients” and therefore don’t have to appear on the label.

However, acrylamides do cause cancer, and they are present in many foods from french fries to breakfast cereals.

As there are many natural foods that are supposedly healthy alternatives to junk food, it’s important to remember that they could still contain acrylamides. Organic potato chips, for instance, will be almost as unhealthy as regular chips for that reason.

It’s best to avoid deep fried food such as chips, or at least take lots of superfoods such as cholorella to compensate if you are going to indulge in these foods.

How to Protect Yourself from These Toxic Foods

The manufacturers of these foods conduct their own lab testing, but they often lie about the test results. This is how contaminated products are usually sold since the importers and retailers don’t do their own testing and simply trust the manufacturers to tell the truth.

This is why as consumers we should look for authentic lab testing on any foods we purchase.

Fortunately, products from retailers such as Natural News, Mercola, Gaia  Herbs, Gary Null, and others are all tested for contaminants, and the raw materials they use are safe.

Another problem is certain products being labeled as organic when in fact they are not. So, looking for an official logo like the USDA for those living in the U.S. is one more step you can take to protect yourself.

The bottom line is there are many crooks out there, but there are still some companies that care about the products they sell. It’s not always easy, but the best thing to do is find those companies and buy products that are truly safe and healthy.

Seltzer

If you’re craving carbonation, seltzer water is very satisfying in that department. There is nothing so refreshing as pure carbonated water without the addition of sugar and chemical flavors. Seltzer water can also come in different flavors (check the ingredients to see whether it’s naturally flavored), and its taste is usually sweet and subtle.

You can also create your own flavors by mixing three parts seltzer with one part pure fruit juice.

Flavored Water

This comes with a caveat, as flavored water that is purchased in supermarkets can be almost as bad as soda. It often contains sugar or aspartame, so check the ingredients carefully. Or better yet, you can make your own flavored water by adding a few slices of fruits and vegetables and letting the water soak up their flavor.

Green Tea

If it’s caffeine you’re craving, you’ll find plenty of it in green tea, which you can drink hot or iced. Of course, there is much debate about whether caffeinated tea is in fact healthy, but there is no doubt that green tea is healthier than soda. It has no calories, is rich in antioxidants and has been linked to cancer and heart disease prevention.

However, the 5-a-day for Better Health Trust states it’s not all that complicated and you don’t have to resort to measuring devices. An adult’s serving equates to at least 500g of fruit and veggies a day, with one fresh, frozen, raw or cooked portion being about 80g-100g.

A dried portion is considered to be 30g and a juiced portion about 200ml.

A Simple Way to Measure out the Vegetable and Fruit Servings

To make things easier, here is a way to know roughly the size of one serving:

  • One fruit weighing approximately 100g such as a medium-sized apple, banana, orange or pear
  • Two smaller fruits such as plums or litchis
  • Half a grapefruit or a thick slice of melon.
  • ½ cup of vegetables (cooked or raw), ½ cup cooked legumes, one cup salad vegetables, and one medium potato (fresh or frozen vegetable portion).
  • One heaping tablespoon of raisins, three apricots or prunes, two figs, and one handful of banana chips (dried fruit portion)
  • 200ml of 100% fruit or vegetable juice, unsweetened (juice portion)

For kids, you can use another rough approximation. Their portion should be the amount that fits into the palm of their hand. Of course, they still get five portions of fruits and veggies a day just like adults.

fiscal-cliff-healthy-foodThe “fiscal cliff” tax bill, which cuts spending and introduces federal tax increases, has been passed on January 1, 2013. It also includes a nine-month farm bill extension that will allow the current subsidizing of the already profitable factory farms to continue.

This means that another $5 billion will go to big farming operations in the form direct payment subsidies. Unlike family farms and organic farms, these farming enterprises hardly require this financial support as they are already making record profits.

A Band-Aid Solution

According to Craig Cox, senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources at the Environmental Working Group, with so many spending cuts taking place in order to reduce the deficit, it would have made sense to cut funding to factory farms as well.

“While a deeply flawed nine-month extension is marginally better than a deeply flawed five-year farm bill, this short-term band-aid is not good public policy,” said Cox. “A responsible measure would have cut direct payments and insurance subsidies and fully funded important conservation programs. It is critical that Congress craft a farm bill this year that supports family farmers and protects the environment.”

The “Fiscal Cliff” bill cuts funding for healthy food and water, family farming, and organic farming, which makes it a serious loss for healthy food initiatives as well as the economy.

“It makes little sense to cut support for organics, the fastest growing sector of the agriculture economy, and to curtail a long list of other initiatives designed to increase access to healthy food and create new economic opportunities for family farms,” Cox said.

  2. Conventional frozen meals. Most conventionally-prepared frozen meals are loaded with preservatives, processed salt, hydrogenated oils and other artificial ingredients, not to mention the fact that most frozen meals have been heavily pre-cooked, rendering their nutrient content minimal at best (especially after getting microwaved again at home). With the exception of a few truly healthy frozen meal brands such as Amy’s and Organic Bistro, most frozen meals are little more than disease in a box, so avoid them in favor of fresh foods.

Shrimp Platters

Just reading about the conditions in which farm shrimp are raised has made me lose my appetite.

“Many people, like me, naively think that farmed shrimp come from the ocean where they use nets to contain them, but in fact they probably come from converted rice fields and mangrove swamps,” says Diana Herrington of Care2.com, “Millions of shrimp are crowded into ponds which have little fresh water or drainage and no symbiotic species so they must sit and grow in their own waste. They are fed artificial feed and chemical additives. To contain the inevitable disease growth these ponds must be pumped with chorine, antibiotics, pesticides and fungicides.”

Sounds delicious! However, you can opt for organic shrimp, or if you are at a restaurant, ask about where the shrimp came from to make sure you don’t eat farmed shrimp.

Popcorn Balls

While popcorn balls are a holiday food that’s hard to resist and they seems pretty harmless, the microwaved variety can actually be deadly if consumed in large amounts. The lining of microwave popcorn bags contains chemicals that can cause various types of cancer as well as a condition called popcorn lung, which causes serious breathing problems.

Red Dyes

Many holiday foods such as cookies or candy canes are colored with a red dye. What some people don’t know is that this dye is made of thousands of crushed insects. To avoid this, read the label carefully and look out for carmine, cochineal, e120, Crimson Lake or Natural Red 4.  Of course artificially dyed food is unhealthy too, so the best option is something that you know is safe, like beet juice.

In short, you can always find a safer alternative to these toxin-filled foods. If you’re at a party, you can always politely avoid them. If you’re making food at home, you can find substitutes that are healthier and probably taste better.

His most recent headlines are not so positive, however. Dr. Oz is currently in hot water thanks to a few things he has said about healthy foods in a recent article that published in TIME Magazine.

Dr. Oz Has Shocked Many With His Healthy Foods Stance

Widely regarded as “America’s Doctor,” many treat whatever Dr. Oz says as gospel truth. Although he does give out some good advice and has advocated alternative health in the past he is currently under attack by some of the big names in the Alternative Health world.

Mike Adams from NaturalNews.com published a couple of articles a few days ago regarding a Dr. Oz article entitled “The Anti-Snob Diet” that featured in TIME Magazine.  This article is not available to read on the web so you’ll have to get a copy of the magazine in order to read the story.

Mike goes on to explain that in the article Dr. Oz basically claims that eating organic foods are for “elitist”, “the 1%”, “snooty”, “snobs” and is just not very “democratic”.  Apparently Dr. Oz is also against farmer’s markets and claims “Nutritionally speaking, there is little difference between the farmer’s-market bounty and the humble brick from the freezer case”. And finally he doesn’t seem to see any point in buying organic meat, stating “Nutritionally, there is not much difference between, say, grass-fed beef and the feedlot variety.”

Another shocking quote from him is “After several years of research and experience, I have come to an encouraging conclusion: the American food supply is abundant, nutritionally sound, affordable and, with a few simple considerations, comparable to the most elite organic diets. Save the cash; the 99% diet can be good for you.” Is anyone really that naïve to actually believe this?

So Has Dr. Oz Become A Sell Out?

The evidence certainly seems to point at Dr. Oz selling out. It does make you wonder why he has had this sudden outburst against organic foods.  Unfortunately so many big names and companies have sold out in recent years to either Big Ag or Big Pharma; it’s all about the money. But has Dr. Oz gone too far? More and more people understand the importance of nutrition and what he has stated in this article is spreading like wild fire. The good doctor no longer has any credibility and this will inevitably lead to a serious loss of followers.

What Went Wrong With Our Food Supply?

Surely we should all consider organically produced foods without chemicals or cruelty as “normal”. This is the kind of food everyone should easily have access to at affordable prices. Why is it that “normal” right now is food pumped full of chemicals, tampered with, highly processed and void of essential nutrients.

Many people do understand the importance of eating the right foods but unfortunately they simply cannot afford to make the switch. So unless you have time, a garden, a know-how of gardening or enough money than going organic is pretty hard – but not impossible.

Do Your Bit To Help Yourself And The Planet

Even if you aren’t all that well off there are certain steps you can take towards a healthier living.

  • Save money by not buying nasty soft drinks, highly processed foods and unhealthy snacks.
  • Drink water, eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat.
  • Walk instead of using the car whenever possible; this way you save on fuel and get fit at the same time.

You can swap an unhealthy diet for a healthy one at pretty much the same cost. It is up to you to make the right choices and lifestyle changes. Prioritizing is key.

Buy organic. All you need to do is a bit of research on the matter and you’ll quickly understand why this is so important. Stay away from conventional food full of pesticides, herbicides, hormones, artificial dyes, synthetic preservatives, sweeteners, antibiotics, GMOs and so on.

Buy from farmer’s markets, especially organic so you support local farmers who love what they do and produce fantastic products full of nutrients and goodness. This is where Dr. Oz has gone wrong and really gotten away from his followers. Farmer’s markets need all the help they can get as big corporations, lower quality products and thus cheaper prices have meant that more and more small businesses are closing down.

Buy organic free-range meat. Conventional animals are raised on genetically modified corn, full of drugs and treated cruelly.

Hold Dr. Oz And Others Accountable

Contrary to what Dr. Oz may believe, organic foods are in fact very important to EVERYONE’S diet and not just for the 1% or elitist. We need to continue to buy organic foods from farmer’s markets while really holding TV doctors, like Dr. Oz, accountable for things they say on or off the record. People count on these “experts” for advice every day and they need to give out good, correct advice at all times.
