And what are those diseases, you ask? Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, myopia and dementia to mention just a few. Mr. Wood reveals startling research about the real cause of these “modern” diseases and tells us what we can do to avoid “catching” them. And even reverse them.

The Ultimate Unification of Diet Health and Disease

diet-bookIn chapter one, Mr. Wood, debunks the myths associated with obesity, weight gain and weight loss. He claims calorie counting won’t help you lose weight, and increased energy expenditure will not lead to significant amounts of fat loss,  either. The only viable way to loose weight, ward off disease, reverse diabetes and cure cancer is by targeting the true underlying abnormality that caused these dismal diseases and the weight gain in the first place.

And how is it that we target this hormonal abnormality? It’s not as hard as you think. All we need to do is eliminate a single “secret” dietary toxin from our food supply.

Instead of blaming all diseases of civilization on all carbs equally, as many low carb diet books (think Atkins diet) tend to do, Mr. Wood drives in and singles out the true and only culprit. Not all carbs are created equal, he writes. Many are not only harmless but even beneficial.

In chapter two, the author discusses the causes of diabetes and the dietary steps that can be taken to reverse and heal this dreaded disease which afflicts and paralyzed nearly 25 million Americans.

In chapter three, Mr. Wood shatters the myths associated with heart disease and high blood pressure and reveals the true nature and cause of heart disease,  and how one can cure, reverse and prevent this disease from taking root. No, cholesterol isn’t a killer, he says. In fact, it’s an essential and important molecule in the human body. And, no, saturated fat is not evil, either, it’s actually healthy.

What is the real causes of heart disease? Not what you think. It’s the sugar and other refined carbs in the diet that make us fat, prevent us from losing that fat and that give us heart disease and high blood pressure.

In chapter 4, Mr. Wood reveals startling new discoveries on dietary-induced cancer. He says that “cancer isn’t a death sentence. The fact remains, as recent research suggests, that as much as 80-90% of all cancer in the US is strictly avoidable.”  And he suggests that cancer can be avoided and even cured by the lifestyle he’s recommending in his book. He also writes that low fat or calorie restricted diets don’t seem to prevent cancer.

In the next chapter, the author reveals never seen before research on Myopia. For the first time ever, Mr. Wood has identified the scientific cause of myopia and what we can do to prevent this dire disease from erupting amongst our children. He writes that “..instead of trying to clarify the underlying cause, contemporary medicine has proclaimed myopia is an incurable malady, only modified by the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses to correct, albeit only transiently, our ailing and failing vision, thereby masking the symptoms of myopia rather than actually curing it.” Mr. Wood certainly clarifies the scientific cause of myopia or nearsightedness.

Following an identical pattern, Mr. Wood debunks many of the other modern diseases of civilization and their underlying cause.

Trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels often yell at contestants to try harder, move faster, and eat healthier.

Since the show is all about gruelling workouts instead of quick fixes, it seems a bit hypocritical that both it’s celebrity trainers advocate weight loss supplements on the side.

 Their Businesses outside of the Biggest Loser

“They promote and sell their supplements independently — they aren’t mentioned on NBC.com or sold in the Biggest Loser store or their own personal websites,” writes Katie Valentine on ThinkProgress.org, “Both trainers have created standalone sites —jillianweightloss.com and bobharpersupplements.com — to sell their supplements.”

“By taking this under-the-radar path with their diet pills, the trainers are using the fame and trust they’ve gained from their time on the Biggest Loser to market weight loss supplements to a consumer base eager for a quick fix that ‘really works.'”

And as it turns out, there is some doubt about the effectiveness of the supplement. Four different people sued Michaels on the basis that her supplements posed a health hazard and didn’t work.

Lynn Willis, professor emeritus of pharmacology at Indiana University, says that Michaels’ Total Body Detox and Cleanse is not effective in the long run.

“This product is an absurdity,” says Willis. “It’s completely bogus that this would detoxify the gut. Someone takes a laxative and they lose two pounds of water weight, but it will come right back.”

If we lived in a perfect world, these charismatic trainers would probably be satisfied with making extra money from workout videos alone. But in a world where everyone is looking for a quick fix, it’s easy to see why Michaels and Harper trainers would opt for selling diet pills.

primal-diet-challengeBethany Sanders has completed a “primal” 30 day challenge, a Paleo diet, which mimics the eating habits of our cave-dwelling ancestors.

“It’s been an interesting month.  There have been moments when I’ve been convinced that this lifestyle is for me,” Bethany says.

“There have also been moments when I wondered why I ever tried to try something so ridiculous. But honestly, it’s mostly been really good for me.”

The Good Points of Being on a Paleo Diet

One of the reasons Bethany decided to go Paleo was to try to beat her carb addiction. And after about a week, she reports that carb cravings were gone.

Other positive outcomes included more energy as well as a more restful sleep. She also found that her IBS symptoms and acid reflux had disappeared.

Bethany also lost five pounds and is no longer craving fast food.

The Not So Good Points

“At some point around the third week, I stopped losing weight,” Bethany says, ” I was using the excuse that I was eating primal to ignore portion sizes, I think.  I was just eating too much.  Because weight loss is my goal, I’ll be counting calories going forward.”

And despite having had a whole months’ experience with this diet, she still finds it a lot of work. All meals have to be planned ahead of time, and it’s hard to come up with a Paleo snack on the run.

Returning to a More Balanced Diet

While Bethany doesn’t foresee giving up sugar and carbohydrates altogether, she was able to dramatically reduce her carb intake and to stop her dependence on carbs.

Bethany is looking forward to a more balanced approach to eating:

“No bread, no crackers, no chips, and no cake.  (Ok, maybe a little cake.) Those are my trigger foods.  But I really miss hummus, brown rice, cheese, sushi and other foods that aren’t technically primal but that have their place in a healthy diet.”

The concept is quite easy to understand and to follow; for five days of the week, simply eat a normal amount food, and for the other two days you are allowed a very small amount of calories: 600 calories for men and 500 calories for women. The diet’s popularity  may be due in part to the freedom from calorie counting on the five non-fasting days.

However, critics say that fasting may deprive the body of essential nutrients. They are also concerned about psychological damage, especially to teenagers who are prone to eating disorders.

The Benefits of the Intermittent Fast Diet

Proponents of the fast diet say that it helps them lose weight fast, but there is  also a number of other health benefits such as prevention of cancer, dementia, and heart disease.

Michael Mosley, the doctor who brought the 5:2 diet to a wider audience, has seen amazingly positive results. Just six weeks after he started the diet, he saw dramatic health improvements.

“I had lost well over a stone, down to less than 12st,” he wrote. “My blood glucose, which had been borderline diabetic, was normal and my cholesterol levels, previously high enough to necessitate medication, were also down in the healthy range.”

British chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is another aficionado of the fast diet.

“Starve yourself once in a while, as our antecedents did for millions of years, by force of circumstance, and your body and digestive system go into recover and repair mode, giving rise to a whole host of physical benefits,” he said.

The Criticism

“Fasting entirely for long periods of time can be harmful,” says Dublin-based dietician Paula Mee. “Your body needs a variety of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from food to stay healthy. Not getting enough of these nutrients during fasting diets can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, constipation, dehydration, gallstones, cold intolerance, not to mention vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which may result in osteoporosis or anaemia if continued over a prolonged period.”

Another concern is that the psychological effects might be harmful to some, especially to those prone to eating disorders. 

“It’s not difficult to see how the Fast Diet could mask disordered eating,” says Claire O’Mahoney of the Independent.ie, “Skipping lunch again today? That’s okay, because you’re on the Fast Diet …”

The Verdict

O’Mahoney recommends good old fashioned gumption as an antidote to diets. But for those who cannot exercise or have other factors such as food addiction to consider, gumption might not be a viable solution.

Ultimately, it is a matter of weighing the pros and cons of this or any other diet. Every individual is different, so a certain diet might not be for everyone; however, for those who have been struggling hopelessly with weight loss issues, a planned eating regimen might be worth a try.

“Maintaining steady blood sugar levels keeps high-sugar and high-calorie cravings at bay,” says Rania Bataynesh, author of The 1:1:1 Diet. With 1.9 grams of fiber per fig, they make a sweet and healthy snack.

Having high amounts of cortisol can lead to excess belly fat, while dopamine and serotonin make you feel happy and relaxed — and therefore less likely to raid the fridge. What helps lower cortisol and raise dopamine levels? Hugging a loved one or receiving a massage from your significant other.
