Natural Ways to Prevent the Flu

flu-holistic-healthAs a particularly virulent strain of flu is sweeping across the northern hemisphere, it turns out that the flu vaccine may not be all that effective against this virus.

According to Natural News, “Previously, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s own studies showed that they believe the flu vaccine to be only 16 to 63 percent effective against the flu. This is the same percentages as those who do not have the flu shot.”

Current Statistics on the Flu Virus

Flu is a big concern this year, as some unusually nasty strains are circulating in large numbers. The number of cases in England, for instance, is up by 83 percent as compared to 2011. In the U.S., 47 states reported high numbers of flu cases.

Two strains of flu are very common this year: one that comes with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and another that is known for causing vertigo and headaches.

Resistance to Vaccine

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “High levels of resistance to the adamantanes (amantadine and rimantadine) persist among 2009 influenza A (H1N1) and A (H3N2) viruses. Adamantanes are not effective against influenza B viruses.”

And what exactly are adamantanes? They are a petroleum derivative. If you would rather put only natural things in your body, try homeopathic remedies and/or vitamins instead.

Prevent the Flu with Homeopathic Remedies

“Homeopathy was an effective an effective treatment for the 1918 flu,” says Talya Dagan of Natural News.

Another benefit of homeopathic treatment is that it is derived from all natural sources and will not cause side effects. The following homeopathic remedies could be effective for different types of flu:

  • Vertatrum album for the type of flu that includes cold perspiration, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and chills
  • Cocculus indicus for the type of flu that includes dizziness, light-headedness or internal trembling

Vitamins C and D

Vitamin D has been effective not only in preventing the flu but also in reducing its symptoms. In a 2007 study, only one percent of those who took a vitamin D supplement actually got the flu.

Vitamin C is also a very effective anti-virus supplement. According to a 1999 study, the recommended dosage is 1,000 mg three times a day.
