The Salt Water Flush (SWF)

November 24, 2008

The Master Cleanse

Salt Water Flush in the morning while doing The Master Cleanse to create a bowel movement and eliminate the toxins in your waste that is continually being eliminated during your cleanse. Since you’re not eating any solid food, you’ll need to create a bowel movement, and the Saltwater Flush will do that. You can, and should also do a laxative at night. The Salt Water Flush is optional but I find it very helpful. Many people find it difficult, but if you watch the video below, you’ll learn some of the tips and technique.

2 Important Tips to make sure you do the Salt Water Flush right

  1. Make sure you don’t used iodized table salt. NON-iodized sea salt is essential.
  2. The Salt Water Flush MUST be done on an empty stomach

The Salt Water Flush is very important. I suggest to do the SWF in the morning as it is suppose to be done on an empty stomach. The process is a commitment in itself. Once you take the solution, you will have to be on guard, a bowel movement WILL be shortly coming. I don’t mean in 5 or even 15 minutes, but generally in 30-60 minutes between taking it and the first movement. The last movements will begin to wind down an hour or so after they begin. This is a, ahem… crappy process, and there is really no way to sugar-coat it. The next few paragraphs will describe in detail what you can expect.

How to prepare the Salt Water Flush mixture:

Sea_salt

Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a solution consisted of :

  • Sea Salt - 2 teaspoons or 1 tablespoon
  • And Pure Water – 1 quart of warm water

Mix a solution of sea salt and room temperature water.

The original book says 2 teaspoons, but I have used 1 tablespoon almost every time and it works for me the same. The last time I did the cleanse, I tried it each way (once with 2 teaspoon and then again with 1 tablespoon), and each time I had success.

What if it doesn’t work?

NOTE: There have been many questions about this process. The fact is, however much some claim it hasn’t worked for them, it will work for absolutely everyone. The key is to adjust the amount of salt in order to create the right solution for your individual needs. Also make sure you don’t used iodized table salt. Un-iodized organic sea salt is essential.

Flush your system with the Salt Water Flush

Sea salt, Salt_water_flush Shake it well and move to the sink. I like to “pound it” – perhaps because I like to pretend I am still in college and the sea salt is actually a keg stand. I also move into the bathroom and stand in front of the mirror. Somehow, by watching myself, I can manage to drink the whole liter in one try, spilling very little. This too is a challenge in itself, especially once your stomach has become very small from taking no solids.

Chances are, you will feel full halfway through, so just keep going. Stopping only makes you taste the salt, and will activate your gag reflex. While it is not required to drink the solution in one go, you will find that the taste is such that you will want to get it down quickly. It is not awful, but it is not exactly pleasant, and therefore I choose to get it over with. I also enjoy the little challenge.

Salt Water Flush Tips

After you have consumed the solution, you can go about your day until nature calls. Some suggest lying on your right hand side to aid the solution on its journey through your digestive track, although I don’t find this especially helpful and so I don’t bother. For some specific tips on how to get the Salt Water Flush ” down”  that we have collected from our readers, read our related articles

Now – what to expect.

Salt_Water_flush
When you first feel the rumble in your belly and your bowels, don’t go running off to the bathroom. Give it a while. Let it brew! Yeah, I know that is weird to think about, but you should let it build up. You are going to have 3-7 movements, possibly more. Generally speaking, you will end up pushing out what you put in. The entire liter of sea salt water will be immediately expelled.

Will the Salt Water Flush dehydrate me?

NO. This is because the solution is indigestible. You may have heard that, if you are stranded at sea, drinking sea water will only dehydrate you more. This is why. It just comes right out of you because the mixture has the same gravity as your blood and is not absorbed.

Of course, along with the sea salt, you will be expelling waste. During the first 2 days you will be moving out remaining solid matter in the digestive tract from the days prior to this.If you began your diet immediately, this will be more true than if you Eased-in, and therefore have only juice in your system. Nevertheless, for each day you will expel solid matter. Gross, to be certain, but also empowering. You really begin to understand the value of this process when you recognize the elimination of waste that has been stored in your body for months, even decades.

Once you feel you can no longer hold out, go to the bathroom. A word of warning while you wait for this moment. DO NOT FART!!! You will most certainly not pass only air – if you know what I mean. This is also true throughout the rest of your day. Don’t be fooled or you will be leaving work to change your shorts. The first movement will be rather large and fairly powerful. You will want to flush almost immediately. In order to understand the whole messy details, take a look… if you dare.

Stay close to a toilet and continue to move until the frequency eases. Once you can last 15 minutes without a serious movement, you are safe to go about your day. For this reason I choose to undergo this process in the evening, with nowhere else to go for the rest of the day. (Also, because I like to have a shower following, and truth be told, I am not exactly a morning person.) The Salt Water Flush isn’t exactly pleasant, but it’s critical to an effective detox.

I am 5′ 7. And weigh 115. Not interested at all in loosing weight. Do i add more syrup? I also have a very difficult time consuming 32oz of water let alone salt water..both make me nausious. Is there a minimum amount of swf? Also does a person who is 115 need as much salt water as some one who is 215?

    1st day update:

O.K., had like 4 more bowel movements which subsided after an hour and then drank my first glass of lemonade, Yaaay! I put a little extra cayenne pepper in it. Wow! pretty spicy, but not too bad since I chugged it right down -swished a little plain water around in my mouth to get rid of the spiciness. Other than that, pretty refreshing!

Since I go to nursing school in the mornings, I may have to wake up a lot earlier in order to get down the SWF and have enough bathroom time!

Hi, Sharon. Where do you live? I finished Nursing school about a year ago! Did you start right away with the Lemonade diet? or did you do the Ease-In?

      Second Day Detox:

Of course this fast is turning out to be quite a challenge like I thought it was going to be! Continued drinking lemonade throughout rest of yesterday. Bought some peppermint laxative tea and sipped before going to bed. I did put a tiny bit of the organic syrup in it just so that I could sip it without it tasting bitter. Woke up a few times because of stomach cramping, but other than that I had pretty good sleep. Woke up about 8am, and had a BM shortly after. Drank SWF and about half hour later made bathroom runs which lasted about an hour.

I am soooooo hungry though! The only reason I think I’m going to make it through this detox fast is because I really want to clear toxins from my body.I hope to also gain more energy!

Currently feeling pretty sluggish and dreaming about a hot cup of coffee! Only 8 more days to go!! :]

Jumped right in to the first day! I ate a small breakfast of wheat toast and all natural jelly and peanut butter this morning. About five hours later decided to start the detox fast and drank the quart of salt water. I warmed the water a little, plugged my nose and proceeded to chug. Wasn’t bad at all. Didn’t even phase me. About an hour after I had a loose bowel movement. I’m hoping I have at least two more. I was going to start my fast tomorrow morning, but I just couldn’t wait!

Oh, by the way, I am 31 years old, a married mother of four who generally eats healthy, I’ve never done a detox fast before and I think I’m going to continue to take my organic whole-food vitamin and fish oil while on this fast.

I will try to keep everyone updated as to how everything goes…..

    Lemonade Diet Day 1

Just drank my first glass of lemonade. The spice stunned me a little but I got through it. This is my first attempt at the Master Cleanse so I am hoping to get through it. I came here for some info on when to start my SWF and found the video very informative. The flush is what scrares me the most as I HATE a lot of salt so I am going to have to really psych myself up for it. I have been doing research about the diet for about a year and had to get started today so I would have time for the ease out days since my daughters b-day is coming up and we are going to do a princess tea and I will be eating light foods plus Thanksgiving with family is coming up too. I am doing this to reset my system so I can work on my weight with a better foundation.

    Wish me luck.

Is it okay to do the SWF with uniodized table salt, instead of uniodized sea salt?

So my roommate and I did the SWF and it was successful for him but I drank the same amount of water and salt and nothing happened. I’ve done it twice now and no results. I guess I have an iron stomach or something. Also, is this okay to do everyday?

Eric says the Salt Water Flush did not work for him.

Eric, I’ve had occasions when the flush didn’t work for me and that was because I don’t think I had an empty stomach or small intestines from the previous day. The whole thing was absorbed.

Try not eating after 6pm the previous day. Fourteen or more hours should be enough to empty your stomach and small intestines.

I actually never do the SWF unless I am fasting and then only on the third to fifth day. By then I know my whole track from top to bottom is empty, but even so, it’s amazing the show the intestines put on. I suspect this oral enema is safer than the usual enema. Also, it isn’t as icky or messy.

I occasionally take a 50,000 HU (heat units) 500mg Hot Cayenne capsule with a first gulp of the salt water. A bit of a sting at the end but the cayenne is good for the whole digestive track.

I don’t think I would mess round with this every morning. Again, I suspect it is most beneficial if you do during a three or more day fast. Our ancestors, the stone age ones, may have had forced or seasonal fasts when the beasts were fewer and harder to find. The euphoria of fasting is amazing.

Day 4: Okay, so today is my first of starting the Master Cleanse. I just dranked the Salt Water Flush and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I’m not a salt user but hey I’m giving it a try. A few minutes after drinking the SWF my stomach cramped a little, it did go away and I managed to keep the swf down. Now I’m just waiting for it to kick in. Oh by the way I’m using Epsom salt instead of sea salt don’t know if it matters or not. If anyone knows if there is a difference between using the two let me know.

You will still detox! I’ve been doing the master cleanse for over 10years and have never done the salt water flush – only because I didn’t know about it! Still – you will detox – I have usually gone and gotten a colonic at or near the end of TMC – or done enemas – so maybe that’s why I have not missed doing the SWF. I highly recommend if you don’t do the SWF – go get a colonic from a trusted and trained professional or give your self an enema – DONOT do the enemas that you buy in the store – go to a pharmacy – get an old school enema kit and then make your own solution. There are different options on enemas depending on how you are feeling …you may do a coffee enema or lemon enema etc. A book entitled “Prescription for Natural Healing” is a great resource. First Day of the Lemonade Cleanse.
Hello, well here I am and with all the ingredients I need to start the cleans – when everything came to a screeching halt … !SWF! I made the stuff and put a little lemon in it (since I hardly ever eat salt and was worried about throwing it up), but when I actually drank some of it I fainted! It was like all the salt just went straight to my brain (POW!). I wasn’t out for long – I just blacked out and came to, so after I slowly drank clean water to “flush” the stuff out.

I think I heard Mike say (in the video) that the salt water flush is optional – and if that is the case, i think ill stick with the laxatives instead. By the way, what is the salt water flush for? If it is just for constipation because of no fiber intake, shouldn’t the laxative take care of that?
Based on my SWF experience, I am not going to do the SWF, but will the cleanse still work with just the laxatives and lemonade?

    very discouraged.

    Ease In – Day 1

This is my second attempt with this cleanse. The first time I lasted only 5 days. It was fantastic and I did it because I had an upper respiratory infection I could not get rid of. 3 rounds of antibiotics and still sick. After 3 days on the MC I could breathe again! It was great.

My question is about the SWF. I could NOT do it! I was only able to do the laxative tea. I know it’s optional, but I’m wondering if I don’t do it at all does that make the MC less effective?
