The Grapefruit Diet is NOT The Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet

Posted on 04. Apr, 2009 by admin in Cleansing, Cleansing & Detox, Detox, Weight Loss

The Grapefruit Diet isn’t as extreme as the Master Cleanse, but the Grapefruit diet can take many forms. The bottom line is that you eat half a Grapefruit or an entire grapefruit before every meal during the diet. This is not to be confused with the Grapefruit Juice Diet, which only uses grapefruit juice or a 1 juice version a Juice Diet or Juice Cleanse.

The basis of the diet is that there is an ingredient of the Grapefruit that when eaten with protien creates a weight loss state. Because of this it seems like the Atkins diet got its start with the Grapefruit diet.

Weight loss occurs because of the low calorie, but you are not starving yourself. In fact, no “diet” should starve you. I think you should always consume calories for your body to function. The more moderate grapefruit diet allows for normal meals but The grapefruit is said to boost your metabolism and can be limited to under 1,000 calories each day.

12 Day Grapefruit Diet

Each day of the 12 day Grapefruit Diet you eat prescribed meals that are similar everyday. Here is an example (remember that you always eat 1/2 of a grapefruit before the meal) This is the Grapefruit diet plan as found on WebMD

Breakfast on the Grapefruit Diet

1/2 Grapefruit – 2 Eggs, 2 Bacon strips, and Coffee

Lunch on the Grapefruit Diet

1/2 Grapefruit – Salad with low fat dressing. As much meat as you want

Dinner on the Grapefruit Diet

1/2 Grapefruit – Green and Red veggies – no starch vegetables like peas, beans corn or potatoes. Again unlimited meat

Snack on the Grapefruit Diet

1/2 Grapefruit – Skim Milk

Weight Loss on the Grapefruit Diet

Even though there is no mention of the quantity of the meat you eat when doing the Grapefruit Diet, there is mention to keep the diet under 1,000 calories and Drink 64 ounces of water –which I personally feel is the backbone of any weight loss diet especially detox diets. Since there are very few calories consumed you would have a caloric deficit and therefore would loose up to 1 pound per day.

I don’t think there is any mystery about why you loose weight –unlike others who claim the grapefruit as the miracle weight loss diet. It is just the combination of low calories and very nutritious Grapefruit. But I think that the all-you-can-eat meat idea to couple the grapefruit diet with protein might be a little off. You might be better to choose other protein sources, as a raw food diet is likely better for the human body than cooked meat. The Grapefruit is low glycemic food and low calorie food. It is high in Vitamin C and fiber.

This Grapefruit Diet is NOT the Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet

Sometimes people call this diet the Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet. This is erroneous. The Mayo Clinic does not endorse this diet at all.

Variations on the Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet Ingredients

There are many versions of the Grapefruit Diet. There is the Grapefruit Juice Diet, the Egg Grapefruit Diet. I personally think a hybrid of the Grapefruit, Juice Feast and Master Cleanse might be a nice choice.

What do you think of the Grapefruit Diet?

What do you think? Is there more or less merit to this Grapefruit Diet than the Master Cleanse or any other diet for detox or weight loss.

I have been on the grapefruit diet before and lost 20 lbs in one month and so far this time I have lost 15 lbs in three weeks. Other then the Jenny Craig diet there is none better for shedding the pounds.

I wanted to loose 8kg and to get rid of it quickly (84 to 76). I started a restrictive diet for 2 weeks then moved to grapefruit juice and the mayo style (low carb). I also planned to go to the gym. The results are astounding. Once in fat burning mode the body feels a little odd but full and the amount of energy I have allows me to gym twice a day! I have not felt badly hungry but can see the results on a daily basis. Force yourself to drink at least 3 litres of water a day on top of what you would normally drink, when you feel peckish @ about 9 in the evening – that is time for bed. Thanks.

Very interesting indeed. The grapefruit is wonderful and I enjoy them as part of my days, but I had never heard of the grapefruit diet like this before.

When it comes to food combining, fruit should be eaten alone and then given 20 minutes to digest before anything else. Your plan here seems to take that into effect and I like it

I have done this diet before, and 1 thing I know for sure is that the first 3 days are hard,if you like sweets and sugary snacks, like I do. But as soon as you hit that 3 day mark as I did your body begins to not crave those sugars. I loved that about this diet!!!! Processed sugars and fats were a problem for me. I did lose weight and that extra protein gave me the strength that I needed to excersise. I will be doing this diet to lose 60lbs because this has been the only diet that I didn’t cheat on!!!!!!

I started the Master Clense today and I am concerned about having migraines which I normally get from insufficient protein intake. I think I’m going to do grapefruit in the AM with MC and salad for lunch then just the MC drink for dinner. I need at least 1 meal with protein. I also work out 5 times a week and have a hectic job so feeling like crap is not an option. I’ve had success with the grapefruit diet so I’m ok making the alteration to my MC plan.

I agree with you that many of these “diets” ultimately restrict calories and encourage a person to increase movement. A thousand calories a day of any food will result in weight loss.

My husband and I started the Master Cleanse yesterday as a jumpstart to a little weight loss (I only have a few pounds to lose) and to get a handle on food cravings. How would you “combine” the Master Cleanse with anything? It’s so restrictive, and I feel like shit.
