The Master Cleanse News Digest is a weekly curation of the best articles of the week about Master Cleanse and it’s pertaining topics.
From holistic healing to detox and cleansing to personal health and development, this article will bring you all you need to know about your favorite cleanse.
This article is put together thoughtfully and thoroughly throughout the week by one of The Master Cleanse writers, Sonya Solomonovich.
Nurse Fired for Refusing to Conform
Carla Brock has worked as a nurse at Cox South Hospital for 11 years. Because she believes in holistic health principles, she opted out of getting the flu shot and was therefore required by hospital policy to wear a surgical mask at work. However, she refused to wear the mask and was fired.
“It’s obviously punitive,” she said about the requirement to wear the mask. She describes it as a sort of “scarlet letter” as well as being uncomfortable to wear throughout the day and off-putting for the patients. According to Brock, it was basically a way to force all staff to conform to the flu shots.
Prenatal Yoga for Stress Relief
Bonnie Berk is a board certified holistic nurse, author, and yoga and wellness instructor. In her prenatal yoga class, she teaches women how to recognize the signs of stress and respond to it in a calm way through the parasympathetic system.
Unlike the sympathetic nervous system, which activates “fight-or-flight” instinct, the parasympathetic nervous system will instill a feeling of calm. Knowing how to respond to stress is not an easy skill to master, but it has amazing benefits not only for the unborn baby but also for mothers who will benefit from it in the long run.
Mike Woodson on Martha’s Vineyard Diet
Knicks’ head coach Mike Woodson is yet another celebrity trying out the Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet. He has already lost seven pounds after a week of fruit and vegetable-based drinks with natural supplements.
“Each drink does something different for your body,” explains Roni DeLuz, the diet’s co-creator. “The green drinks detoxify your organs and feed you on a cellular level. The live juices made from fresh vegetables contain nutrients that your body uses immediately for repair.”
You can mix and match the drinks according to your preference as long as you have one every two hours to keep your metabolism going.
Gwyneth Paltrow Tries Superfoods instead of Cleanse
Gwyneth Paltrow has informed the world through her GOOP Newsletter that she is not doing a new year cleanse this time, reports Drew Grant of the New York Observer, “That’s right folks, Gwyneth Paltrow is NOT ON A CLEANSE, and we can all eat pasta again. Hooray!”
The actress said she would probably do the cleanse another time but that for now she would like to try using superfoods in everyday recipes such as pasta.
“I asked my friend Dr. Frank Lipman about his list of superfoods so that I could incorporate them into my diet a bit more,” she said, “If you are going to eat pasta, why not serve it with a walnut pesto (walnuts are on his list)?”
Best Plant-Based Diets for 2013
The 2013 U.S. News’ annual Best Diets list now for the first time ever includes a Best Plant-Based Diets section. This is due both to the growing popularity and the proven health benefits of these diets. Criteria for ranking included weight loss, good nutrition, and ease of following the diet.
The Mediterranean Diet, scoring four out of five stars, was the number one plant based diet as well as number three in the overall diet rankings. It was followed closely by The Flexitarian Diet (flexible vegetarian), which is primarily vegetarian while allowing a few indulgences. The Ornish diet, which is a low fat and also fairly flexible diet, came in third.
Bearded Bros Serve up Natural Snacks
“I’m always on the lookout for the next great food bar, and a relatively new company called “Bearded Bros” has just topped my list with an amazing new lineup of (mostly) raw food bars made with nearly all organic ingredients,” says NaturalNews.com editor Mike Adams.
With a short and sweet list of organic ingredients, these bars are not overpoweringly sweet in terms of taste. And of course, they contain no genetically modified food, no fillers, no corn syrup, and nothing synthetic.
Detox is More than Just a Quick Boost
Naturopath Genna Pyewacket says detoxing is so much more than a break from junk food, especially when done with the help of a professional dietician or nutritionist. After seeing more than her fair share of clients in their twenties lacking vitality, she says detoxing is a must to regain good health.
“Detoxing is a way of rebooting to achieve a baseline again,” Genna says. “You can go on year after year only maintaining yourself, but when you start work on a different energy level, on a completely different fuel source, it allows you to reconsider what you will re-introduce slowly back into your diet.”
A One-Week Smoothie Diet
Here is a seven-day diet that offers both detoxification and weight loss. Begin with detox smoothies for the first three days, such as a mango, apple, and dandelion smoothie to stimulate the gall bladder on day 1.
From day 4 onward, you transition from detox smoothies to weight loss smoothies such as a blend of skimmed milk, frozen strawberries, bananas, protein powder and brewer’s yeast to balance out glucose levels. Aside from these smoothies, you should be eating grilled chicken or fish, fruits and veggies, beans and brown rice throughout the week.
Oregano Oil as an Alternative to Antibiotics
Most commercial food producers feed their animals antibiotics to prevent bacterial diseases from spreading, but one organic farmer has come up with a different solution. Chickens at Bell & Evans farms have benefited from oregano oil and cinnamon being added to their feed.
As consumers become more savvy about where their food comes from, Bell & Evans has also enjoyed economic success since adding naturally bacteria-fighting foods to their chickens’ diet.
How to Treat Swollen Feet and Ankles
Swelling of feet and ankles, otherwise known as edema, can be caused by many different things such as pregnancy or high blood pressure. While this is not a serious condition, it can be uncomfortable.
There are several alternative remedies you can try, from taking a magnesium supplement to soaking in a bath with Epsom salts. Another great way to improve circulation is with yoga. Your yoga instructor can advise you on specific poses that will help with this condition.
Lose Weight Fast
Lose Belly Fat with These Four Foods
If you’re interested in losing weight the natural way, there are some amazing weight loss foods that can help you. First of all, citrus fruits because they help you burn fat. Even doing as little as squeezing a bit of lemon juice into your water or tea in the morning can go a long way.
Next is green tea, which has actually been shown to promote weight loss on the genetic level. Avocados and coconut oil are two foods that are high in fat, but this is actually a good thing because the fats they contain are essential to maintaining a healthy weight.
Do We Really Need a HAPIfork to Make us Happy?
The latest weight-loss gadget to be touted by several health and wellness websites and magazines is HAPIfork. This is a fork that measures the time of your meals as well as how quickly you’re eating. The fork “gently shames you with the help of indicator lights when you are eating too fast.”
Is this really happening? Do we need a fork to “shame” us? Wouldn’t it be better to learn self-control in our eating habits instead of outsourcing it to a rather silly-looking machine?
“Silly? Sure it is, but someone will likely buy one,” says Eric Steinman of Care2.com.
Advice from Dr. Etti
“Many people go away on expensive retreats to the mountains, but I think it’s important to bring it home,” she said, “Bring it into the “Yoga of Life.” You don’t need to go far away in order to feel good. You deserve to feel good right now!”
She also recommends asking for support from your family, especially if you normally are the one who does the cooking. “For the first three days you need to ask for support. By the fourth and fifth day you’ll be so high and feel so good, you won’t want it, but ask for a little help those first few days. People don’t do that enough now.”
Goji Berry Smoothie
Goji berries are a superfood with amazing anti-aging, immune function and heart health benefits. This goji berry smoothy combines coconut water, bananas, avocados, raspberries, chia seeds, and flax seeds. It’s a potent combination of fiber, vitamin A, potassium, and essential fatty acids.
If you don’t happen to have goji berries on hand, you can replace them with cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, or mulberries.
Self-Help Books to Avoid
In an article that pokes fun at the self-help industry, Robert Chalmers of GQ provides some examples of rather unhelpful works such as How to Influence People at Parties by Javier Topaz. There is also 365 Ways To Be Romantic by Gregory JP Godek, which gives men the following advice: “compliment [a woman] every four hours… write ‘I love you’ on the bathroom mirror; draw faces on the eggs in her fridge. Make love in a lift.”
While the above may not be prime examples of personal development books, I believe there is much to be said in favor of exploring the self-help bookshelf as you seek answers to personal dilemmas.
Music Lessons Prove Beneficial in Many Areas
“Skill in appreciating the subtle qualities of sound, even against a complicated and noisy background, turns out to be important not just for a child learning to understand speech and written language, but also for an elderly person struggling with hearing loss,” Perri Klass said in a New York Times article about the study.
A Simple Way to Get Rid of Morning Migraines
Did you know that many cases of migraines can be relieved simply by raising the head of your bed? According to Sydney Ross Singer, “lying flat in bed can cause the brain to get pressurized and congested with stagnant fluid, reducing the oxygen and sugar availability for brain cells and increasing metabolic waste products.”
“The brain desperately needs proper circulation or its cells can die. As a first defense, your brain wakes you up so you can stop lying down. However, most people try going back to sleep, so the pressure and stagnation continue. The brain has another mechanism to save itself. Blood vessels that supply the head and brain open widely, temporarily increasing the pressure to essentially flush the brain with fresh fluid. This “brain flush” is painful and is experienced as a migraine headache. It happens in the morning after a nighttime of brain congestion caused by lying too flat.”
Exercises to Do at your Desk
As research has shown, sitting down for long amounts of time is seriously hazardous to our health. Not only does it put you at risk of early death, it also increases your odds of gaining weight, feeling sore, and experiencing decreased energy.
So for anyone who works at a desk job or sits for many hours in classrooms, there are some exercises that you can do either at your desk or during break time.
Try Aquatic Fitness to Get into Shape
Water aerobics, also known as aquatic fitness or aquafit, is a safe and fun workout. It’s easy on your joints because of its low-impact aquatic environment, and you burn a surprising amount of calories while moving in the water and staying cool.
This is the perfect workout for anyone who wants to get into shape, lose weight, or just have fun. It’s especially recommended for those who are overweight or suffering from joint problems and other injuries. Even a gentle exercise program like yoga can be hard for some people with injuries because of the impact on their joints, but aquatic fitness provides a safe and pain-free workout.
Hurray for Healthy Peanut Butter Cups!
“I refuse to give up eating delicious desserts in the name of “health” because they make me happy, and in my eyes, happiness and health go hand-in-hand,” says Jamie Shneider on the Reboot with Joe website, “I just make sure to find or make the healthier alternatives so I avoid the desserts that have a laundry list of ingredients that I can’t even pronounce.”
In order to create a healthy but enjoyable dessert, Jamie has come up with these alternatives to “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup” that use simple ingredients such as cocoa and maple syrup. They take only 15 minutes to prepare!
