Pure + simple’s Natural and Holistic Skincare

kristen-holistic-healthKristen Ma, co-owner of Pure + simple Inc., along with her mother Jean Eng have created their own line of skincare products because they had not been able to find anything to fulfill their needs.

There is a holistic ideology behind their spas and products that is based on the Ayurveda system. It’s all explained in Kristen’s first book Beauty: Pure + Simple - “a must-read for anyone frustrated with their skin despite having tried everything, or just not feeling generally well (the two go hand-in-hand).”

Woman Reports Cleanse was Easy and Invigorating

Deanna-S“It was so much easier than I could have imagined!” says Deanna S., a 44-year-old Colorado woman who lost 95 pounds and greatly reduced her risk of diabetes and hypertension — she had been on the borderline of both before the juice cleanse. Plus, she has the benefit of clearer skin and feeling more energized.

“The key for me was to consume variety of juices,” she says, “I’d always been keen on cooking, but I had very little experience using greens and veggies.  In addition to the weight loss and other health benefits, learning to use dark greens and other veggies in my daily meals was invaluable.”

Healthy Food

Holiday Foods to Avoid

holiday-healthy-foodThere are so many delicious traditional holiday foods we can enjoy in the festive season, but unfortunately many of these could be hazardous to our health. Canned cranberry sauce, shrimp platters, sugary sweets especially those with artificial coloring), and popcorn balls all have hidden dangers that we may not have been aware of.

This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of these or similar foods, but it would be wise to know where the food has come from or to make your own healthier versions.

How to Make Sure You’re Eating Healthy Sushi

sushi-healthy-foodWhile sushi is generally considered a healthy food, it’s important to remember that not all sushi is created equal. The healthiest sushi is one you make from scratch or get freshly made at a restaurant instead of pre-packaged. The kind of sushi that comes in a package usually contains preservatives such as FD & C Blue #1 and Yellow #5.

Other tips include going for wild fish over farmed and brown rice rather than white. You should also avoid tempura, which is possibly the unhealthiest part of sushi, being deep-fried and containing a ridiculous amount of calories.

Easy Detox Tips

holiday-detox-coffeeOye! Fashion brings us some welcome tips for staying healthy and detoxing during the holidays without making too many sacrifices. For example, if you happen to be hung over after a party, there is a homeopathic remedy called  Nux Vomica to ease the nausea.

Another simple thing you can do is replace your morning coffee with tea, and if you’re going to be drinking alcohol at parties, bring your own mixers: “if you alternate that Prosecco with say, Moon Juice Cucumber, Pineapple, & Jalapeno juice, or try a yummy Gingered Lemon juice as the base for your vodka instead of sugar-loaded cranberry juice — with a little seltzer added into the mix, you could be way better off in the a.m.”

Herbal Tinctures for Overall Immune System Health

Tincture-Bottles-Healing-HerbsAccording to Natural News, we often take for granted some very powerful medicinal herbs that “can actually be found growing unassumingly in fields, forests, and jungles around the world.” There is still much research to be done to discover the healing properties of some plants, but there are many herbs that already have a scientifically proven efficacy in fighting disease and improving immune function.

Astragalus, for instance, has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine, and with good reason. It is reputed to benefit the blood, the spleen, and the “chi” or life force. It inhibits the spread of cancer cells, strengthens vital organs and gives the body an overall energy boost.

Moldy Cheese a Proven Anti-Inflammatory Agent

1217587.largeI had always thought cheese was undeservedly given a bad rap, and now there’s scientific proof to that effect. Researches at Lycotec, a British biotech company have discovered that moldy cheese may be the answer behind the longevity of the French.

“But it’s not just any cheese that’s likely contributing to the longevity and good health of the French,” says Katie Waldeck of Care2.com. “Nope, the researchers specifically pinpointed  a diet heavy in moldy cheeses can be beneficial to your health. Roquefort, the veiny blue cheese aged in the caves in Southern France for almost 2,000 years, is among them.”

This cheese has been proven to reduce inflammation, which in turn reduces the risk of many undesirable conditions from cellulite to cancer.

What Business Leaders Can Learn from Studying Aikido

300px-Morihei-Ueshiba13Richard Moon, author Aikido, Harmony, and the Business of Living, explains that his methods of executive coaching are based on a martial art that teaches mindfulness, adaptability, and being fully present in our life experience. All of these can be applied in everyday business activities. For example, the idea of mindfully influencing situations rather than mindlessly reacting is something every business leader should learn.

“Imagine a new generation of organizational leaders who, unlike those in full-time MBA programs, learn from each other and their sensei while practicing in the field,” says Drew Hansen of Forbes, “It could be modeled after the coaching of elite athletes in CrossFit and MMA. More than an Executive MBA program, it’s an ongoing process grounded in the theory of human development.”

Don’t Stress Out about Party Hosting

Dec12_party-pressure-384x240Hosting a party shouldn’t be a stressful occasion, but some people have barriers to overcome when faced with this endeavor says Sandy Coughlin, author of the Reluctant Entertainer blog as well as a book entitled The Reluctant Entertainer: Every Woman’s Guide to Simple and Gracious Hospitality.

Coughlin says many people stress out about hosting “because they were simply never shown how. Maybe they didn’t have hospitable parents or their parents got so stressed out in party-throwing situations that they made entertaining seem forbidding.”

Parents Say No to Vaccinations for their Children

50-Reasons-NOT-to-Vaccinate-your-Children1It seems parents in Australia are in agreement with Natural News on the issue of vaccination. Many are opting out of vaccinating their children rather than risk exposing them to toxins such as mercury, often found in vaccines.

According to Natural News Buzz, “This has taken the authorities by surprise and they are relentless in their efforts to continue with the vaccination programs that are perfectly designed to ruin human health. These vaccination programs earn huge profits for pharmaceutical companies and hence the government always wants to move ahead with the programs at any cost.”

Coping with the Newtown Shooting

NewtownKatherine Stone, author of a blog called Something Fierce, has put together a guide for moms (or anyone for that matter) trying to overcome the shock of the recent school shooting in Newtown. “I reached out to some of my friends who are experts in the maternal mental health world to get some input,” she writes, “Probably the most comforting thing was hearing from all of them that it’s okay if you are seriously struggling with what happened on Friday. It’s normal.”

Some of the suggestions coming from experts include simply finding a safe space to talk about how you feel with someone you trust. Allow yourself to feel shocked or scared, “Then, find a safe place to distract yourself, regroup, breathe and hug your children.”
