How to Fast for Weight Loss and Wellness (The Definitive Guide to Fasting)

Here's the thing.

Most of the advice you're getting about dieting, weight-loss and especially Fasting are DEAD WRONG!

We know because we see study after study that contradict what popular culture and even common sense might tell you.

Yes, Doctors are people too and subject to bad, old, or down-right mis-information.

Did you know that Doctors only get 1 hour of nutrition training in their 7-10 years of training.

That's shameful.

But not surprising, given that the system of education is largely shaped by the same corporations (Big Pharma), that want you to believe in “Pills and Surgery” as the alter of the “Sick-Care” industry.

That's why when we say Lose Weight “Fast” we're intentionally triggering your beliefs and your desires in an effort to liberate yourself into an open mind-set about what it means to lose weight rapidly, and through what's been conventionally controversial but now widely heralded act of “Fasting”

Fasting

To be able to say “Lose Weight Fast” is what all the hype is about these days in the “Weight Loss Industry” (sigh).

Yes, we all want things fast; cars, food, lifestyles, and Times at Ridgemont High. And the faster we put on 20lbs after highschool snarfing down too many of spicoloy's pizzas, the faster we want to lose weight.

It seems we all want the quick fix.

Fasting has long been held in such high esteem that it felt religious to a fault. It's been done so long by humans for spiritual and physical healing, but somehow that fact get's lost on the general population, and therefore relegated to the margins of healing modalities.

But finally, study after study is showing how effective Fasting is, with one such study boldly proclaiming their findings that a 3 day fast will “renew the entire immune system”.!

This remarkable study from The University of Southern California (USC) who state that fasting “flips a regenerative switch” that prompts stem cells to create white blood cells, essentially restoring the immune system.!

“It gives the OK for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system,” said Valter Longo, professor of gerontology and biological sciences at the university.!

“And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting”.!

Proponents of The Master Cleanse have known this for so long, but alas, to debate the arguments of fasting, for and against, is beyond the scope of this report. But I think it's safe to say, that the typical, reasonable person, can agree that a degree of fasting in one form or another, is probably effective in aiding the bodies healing processes.!

Type of Fasting

We already talked a little about “Super Diets” (and all diets by nature) and how they each essentially are eliminating a food, or “fasting” from it.!

But, we often say phrases like “Juice Fast” or “Water Fast” to describe the fast we're on, when in fact, we're not describing what we're fasting (eliminating from our diet, plan or routine), but rather what we're allowing while on our fast. Juice Fasts allow for juices. Water Fast allow for water. !

Technology Fasting, on the other hand, which is the act of abstaining from using technology –which I really could use– is phrased opposite to the past example.!

It really doesn't matter how we phrase the name of the Fast we're doing, as long as we understand what the big picture idea is. We're consciously choosing to eliminate a certain substance from our lives for a period of time. In the case of both Juice Fast and Water Fast, we're abstaining from all other foods.!

Besides the “thing(s) being Fasted, perhaps the biggest attribute that defines a Fast is the duration.!

  • Mini-Fasts: Less than 24 hours
  • Short Term Fasts: 1-2 Days
  • Mid-Term Fasts: 2-4 Days
  • Long-Term Fasts: Longer than 5 Days
  • Intermittent Fasting (Alternating Stop/Start or Fast/Feast)

Mini-Fasts

Yes, when you sleep you're fasting, which is why we call our first meal of the day “Breakfast”. We're breaking our nightly fast.

12 Hour Fast: Dr. Junger of the Clean Program speaks to a 12 Hour Detox window, which states that our bodies enter a new phase of digestion, elimination and repair after 8 hours and therefore the normal window of sleep doesn't allow for us to optimize this fasting function, therefore fasting for the first 4 hours of waking will create a mini detox fast, and is something that we routinely incorporate into The Master Cleanse Program.

Short Term Fasts

1 Day Fasts: The Ease-In and Ease-Out both have short segments of 1 Day Fasts that limit the foods consumed to either Salads, Soups, Smoothies (and Juices).!

1 Food Fasts: “Mono Meals” and “Mono Diets” focus on eating only 1 food at a time, often for each meal, each day, or sometimes for many days. The Orange Juice day of the Ease-In segment is a 1 Food Fast.!

Mid Term Fasts

Fasts longer than 1 Day but shorter than 3 days are grouped due to how the body reacts to the timeline of this length. Like the 12 Detox Window, the body will change “modes” after a few days of a certain diet. This is why days 2 and 3 of The Lemonade Diet are often very challenging, and why we recommend doing at least 10 Days of The Lemonade Diet, so you don't unnecessarily suffer the most challenging days of the fast, and fail to realize the benefits of the deep detox mode your body will shift into after a period time as it recognizes that the current reality is stable. It adapts.!

3-5 Day Fasts: Are perfect for the Retox Diet, as the process of digestion of a new food can be seen to its completion.!

Long Term Fasts

7-10 Day Fasts: Like The Master Cleanse, a nice little window that optimizes the bodies changing phases/modes, yet short enough that they're “chunkable” by the human mind, leaving us to think we can do it by no leaving long countdowns mid-fast (only 5 more days left ;)!

Multi-Week Fasts: Anything over 10 days up to 30 days or more can change the dynamic of managing the fast, from marginal differences, to significant considerations. None of the Fast Segments in the Super Fast last longer than 10 days, unless you do an Advanced Master Cleanse Program of 60 or 90 days.!

Naturally, every body is different and has different lengths to their cycles. !
