Superfoods are vibrant, nutritionally dense foods that offer tremendous dietary and healing potential. They are powerful sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, good fats, essential fatty and amino acids, and other nutrients that offer deep levels of nutrition, healing and wellness.

Yes, it’s true, the word “Superfood” is a marketing term used to describe foods with certain health benefits, and so I feel I must disclaim that fact right up front.

The term is used frequently in a wide variety of contexts. It appears to first be referenced by Aaron Moss in the journal Nature Nutrition in the August edition of 1998, which stated, “Humans have many options when it comes to fueling their bodies, but the benefits of some options are so nutritious that they might be labeled as superfoods.”

In legal terms it has no standing however, although its use has been regulated in certain jurisdictions. For example, since 1 July 2007, the marketing of products as “superfoods” is prohibited in the European Union unless accompanied by a specific medical claim supported by credible scientific research.

In Europe, the term functional food, a concept originally conceived in Japan, rather than superfood is used to describe a food that beneficially affects one or more target functions in the body beyond adequate nutritional effects in a way that is relevant to either an improved state of health and well-being and/ or reduction of risk of disease. It is consumed as part of a normal food pattern. It is not a pill, a capsule or any form of dietary supplement.

Now I don’t know about all that legal positioning, and protectionism, but I do know, without a doubt that we should “Let food be our medicine”, in many cases, and that any deniers of food’s ability to heal may have their reason far and wide, but it will not distil my passion for the plan truth that some foods and foodstuffs promote wellness and other promote disease.

What’s more, and because of this range, some foods are more healing, or sickening than others. This is why the term

SuperFood emerged to describe those foods that seem to go “above and beyond”, providing a certain degree of elevated value over their class.

The challenge until now has been to understand what qualities of a food, at

what levels, and for what reasons, would qualify a food as a Super Food.

There is a never ending supply of articles and books on the “Top X” Super Foods, and while many seem obvious choices, others seem like a stretch. What we really need to do is develop a “Super Food Rank”, a scoring methodology that utilizes “generally accepted nutritional principals” to identity a foods or foodstuffs value.

The SuperFood Rank

The SuperFood Rank is my fantasy to develop completely, but such an effort falls well outside the scoop of this book, at this time.

However, that won’t stop me from documenting the beginnings of this theory and application, with a few attributes or qualities that we might consider, the scores we might apply, and how that might end up forming a list of the top Super Foods available to mankind at this time.

Qualities required to be considered a Super Food.

  • Nutrient Density: The measurement of how much of any particular
  • nutrient the food contains in regards to how much is in one serving.
  • These 3 Super Foods melt fat away at up to 2 pounds per day
  • Nutrient Diversity: The measurement of how many different nutrients
  • are available in this one food.
  • Phytonutrient/Phytochemical Content: The amount of healthy chemical compounds, known and unknown, that exist in plants. There are potentially thousands of phytonutrients in plants and any superfood should be a known source.
  • Toxin Absence: The goal of consuming superfoods is to load the body with as many nutrients as possible. Superfoods should represent clean, hormone-free, chemical and pesticide-free sources of nutrition.
  • Strategic Distribution of Calories: It’s clear that foods can be eaten on their own, but are almost always eaten in gorups, making this factor hard to evaluate. Regardless of that fact, it’s also clear that some foods are naturally “balanced” towards some emerged trends in caloric source distribution models like the 80-10-10 diet.
  • High in Fibre: Since fibre is a sign of a natural food, higher fibre foods can be seen as an indicator of the Super Food Score
  • Strategic Proportions of Related Nutrients: Many nutrients work in pairs, and the ratio of those materials are just as important as the nutritional value on their own, such as Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Omega-6 Fatty Acids.
  • Medicinal Properties: FDA, and legal mandates asside, the medicinal properties of food are undeniable (which is why it’s the FOOD and DRUG administration), and frustratingly obvious in motive, how the FDA will deny the healing power of food
  • Acidic or Alkaline PH Balancing: Many diets are built around keeping the body’s PH Balance optimal. Since most toxic foods are acidic, and it’s generally accept that acid bodies degrade, and become diseased, alkalizing foods are of import.

Super Food Groups

In the course of writing this book, all the foods we researched fell into the following groups, and our#1 Super Food from each group that we’ve found to be “Super” useful in our desire to “Lose Weight Fast”, but also for detox and cleansing.

  • Super Fruits
  • Super Veggies
  • Super Herbs
  • Super Meats
  • Super Nuts
  • Super Beans & Legumes
  • Super Oils
  • Super Sugars

We’ll use these groups in discussion, and for the purpose of crafting advanced meal plans for The Super Fast, because, as we said, our first fundamental is to eat the best, most enjoyable Super Foods.

And knowing that those Super Foods are “functional” in their medicinal or healing abilities, we’ll be half way home when it comes to creating a wellness based diet plan and lifestyle.
