Soups can be about as filling as solid food but they are much easier to digest. Besides the fact that they can be a really yummy and warming food to enjoy on a cold day, they are also great transitional food when you are switching to all liquid diet. Broth-based soups are also low in energy density, meaning they have relatively few calories per gram. Choosing foods low in energy density can help you fill up with fewer calories, which will assist in achieving your weight lose goals.!
Try to make those low fat, go very light on the salt or try no salt at all to release some water weight you may be holding onto to. !

Souping is the New Juicing
http://www.yogajournal.com/food-diet/souping-new-juicing-plus-8-recipes-try/
Juicing is so 2014. And with these polar vortex-esque temps, a soup detox is more what we need right about now. Plus, it might even be healthier than guzzling green juice.
“In terms of general health, souping can actually be a bit healthier for detox compared to juicing for one basic reason: soups retain fiber,” says Jennifer Iserloh, aka the “Skinny Chef,” a classically trained chef and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. “Fiber is crucial for feeding your microbiome (the good gut bacteria) responsible for the strength of your immune system. Fiber also plays a key role in moving toxins out of your body, since it bulks up stool and literally cleans the walls of your intestinal tract. Fiber also helps to anchor your blood sugar, making you less hungry throughout the day while consuming fewer calories.”
In the colder months, soups can also help you to feel more full and satisfied, since they are warm and soothing, Iserloh says. “According to Ayurveda, warm purees and soups are also a boon for digestion, since they stoke the ‘agni’ or fire of your digestive system, unlike cold drinks that can ‘extinguish’ the potency of your digestion and even give you cramps,” she adds.
Another plus to making soups? “It’s a lot cheaper to brew a big pot of soup with a few veggies than to buy all the fruits and veggies you need for one glass of juice,” Iserloh says.
Need to cleanse and recharge—or just feel a little warmer on a cold night?
In this plan, you’ll eat soup six times a day. There’s no need to count calories and you can have as much soup as you want at each sitting. Print this one-sheet to keep on your fridge to help you with the plan.

Broth Fasting
We’re all familiar with a broth fast, when we got the flu and Mom would bring us a mug of hot broth, we were broth fasting.
We can fast on animal or vegetable broths, although it will usually require you make your own broth. Commercially available broths don’t have the nutritional levels appropriate for fasting, being full of salt and usually MSG and a host of other chemicals. On the other hand, a homemade broth can be highly nutritious, full of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes–even an animal-based broth, actually especially an animal bone broth.
Bone broths are extremely nutritious, high in minerals and rich in gelatin and collagen. Adding an acid, like wine or vinegar, during preparation will help draw out the minerals, particularly calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
To make a bone broth: start with the highest quality bones available, preferably organically-raised and hormone-free animals. Add 2-4 tablespoons vinegar (depending on how large a batch you’re making), any vegetables you want to add, and water to cover. Let this sit for 30 minutes to an hour, then bring to a boil and remove any scum that appears on the surface. Continue to simmer anywhere from 4-24 hours, the longer the simmer, the more nutrients will be drawn out of the bones.
To make a vegetable broth: use any organically-grown vegetables you want, cover with water, and simmer 30-40 minutes. Because of their extremely high nutritional content, be sure to add some dark leafy greens to the mix. Strain, saving the vegetables for another time.
3 Day Soup Fast for Detox
Souping is a “new” nutrient-packed way to detox that can be comforting, inspirational and fun. Yes, a fun detox.
Where Juicing is often tasty with all those sugary fruits, and salads are raw and crunchy, there’s nothing like the process of putting on a your chef hat, creating your broth, and enjoying the warmth of your soup.
Muppet Soup Chef
Soup 1: Breakfast Soup
Make this berry soup first thing in the morning. The kefir in it has three times the probiotics in yogurt and will give your digestive system a huge boost for detox.
Soups 2-5: The Main Meals
The next four soups in this plan contain nutrients to help burn fat and elevate your metabolism. Start with a vegetable soup base that you’ll prep in advance to last three days. It’s a mix of low-sodium veggie broth plus the core four detox ingredients cooked or steamed. Here’s how they help you:
- Mushrooms battle inflammation.
- Broccoli is filled with fiber to cleanse your colon.
- Tomatoes help break down the toxins in your liver. (Canned tomatoes are fine to use.)
- Artichokes stimulate bile flow, which gets toxins out of your liver and also aids in digestions. (Canned artichokes are fine to use.)
This will be the base of most of your soups. Feel free to add as many additional non-starchy veggies or any spices to taste. If you feel like you still need more substance, add in three ounces of protein, fat and grains per meal.
Pick from the below add-ins:
- Protein will help boost your metabolism. Choose beans, chicken, tofu or chickpeas.
- Fat can help you absorb essential detox vitamins. Choose from avocado and seeds like sesame, chia or pumpkin.
- Grains can help with energy. Choose from quinoa, brown rice or buckwheat noodles.
Soup 6: Dessert Soup
Make this apple cinnamon sweet potato soup at the end of the day. This plan uses natural, whole ingredients so you can soup detox as often as you want.

- 10 – The Cabbage Soup
The cabbage soup diet isn’t the original crash diet—that distinction goes to William the Conquerer, who, too heavy for his horse, resorted to an all-liquor “cleanse” in 1087—but it is one of the most famous. And surely the most malodorous. Eat as much cabbage soup as you like, along with random foods in pairings that defy logic, for seven days. You will be a slip of a thing in a week! You’ll also be starving, the worst sort of meal companion, and a verifiable grump.
Enter a fresh, modern update for days when you just feel, shall we say, a little more puffy than usual. This soup is the kitchen work of Angela Liddon, the blogger behind Oh She Glows and author of the forthcoming cookbook of the same name. It’s a bit of a miracle worker, and one that Liddon told us she likes to eat after a period of over-indulgence.
“[After a bowl] I always feel more balanced, healthy, and energized.” It’s brimming with every culinary cure-all under the sun—garlic, mushrooms, ginger, turmeric, and kale—then dressed with a squeeze of lemon and a smattering of nori. (Thrill-seekers might like to shake a bit of cayenne on there, too).
After a winter weekend of bloody marys and bottomless bowls of ragu, this is just what the doctor ordered.

Superfoods are vibrant, nutritionally dense foods that offer tremendous dietary and healing potential. They are powerful sources of clean protein, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, good fats, essential fatty and amino acids, and other nutrients that offer deep levels of nutrition, healing and wellness.
Yes, it’s true, the word “Superfood” is a marketing term used to describe foods with certain health benefits, and so I feel I must disclaim that fact right up front.
Qualities required to be considered a Super Food.
- Nutrient Density: The measurement of how much of any particular
- nutrient the food contains in regards to how much is in one serving.
- These 3 Super Foods melt fat away at up to 2 pounds per day
- Nutrient Diversity: The measurement of how many different nutrients
- are available in this one food.
- Phytonutrient/Phytochemical Content: The amount of healthy chemical compounds, known and unknown, that exist in plants. There are potentially thousands of phytonutrients in plants and any superfood should be a known source.
- Toxin Absence: The goal of consuming superfoods is to load the body with as many nutrients as possible. Superfoods should represent clean, hormone-free, chemical and pesticide-free sources of nutrition.
- Strategic Distribution of Calories: It’s clear that foods can be eaten on their own, but are almost always eaten in gorups, making this factor hard to evaluate. Regardless of that fact, it’s also clear that some foods are naturally “balanced” towards some emerged trends in caloric source distribution models like the 80-10-10 diet.
- High in Fibre: Since fibre is a sign of a natural food, higher fibre foods can be seen as an indicator of the Super Food Score
- Strategic Proportions of Related Nutrients: Many nutrients work in pairs, and the ratio of those materials are just as important as the nutritional value on their own, such as Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Omega-6 Fatty Acids.
- Medicinal Properties: FDA, and legal mandates asside, the medicinal properties of food are undeniable (which is why it’s the FOOD and DRUG administration), and frustratingly obvious in motive, how the FDA will deny the healing power of food
- Acidic or Alkaline PH Balancing: Many diets are built around keeping the body’s PH Balance optimal. Since most toxic foods are acidic, and it’s generally accept that acid bodies degrade, and become diseased, alkalizing foods are of import.
