The 10-Day Guide

The Master Cleanse,
day by day.

A clear guide to understanding the traditional 10-day process — from preparation and the first day through the repeated daily routine and transition back to regular food.

Before You Begin

Preparation comes first.

Understanding the ingredients, the traditional recipe, the preparation period and Ease-Out before you begin makes the overall process much easier to follow and plan.

Each of the guides below covers one part of that groundwork.

  1. 01

    Gather the ingredients

Review the traditional ingredients and preparation items.

  2. 02

    Understand the recipe

Review the traditional lemonade recipe and preparation method.

  3. 03

    Plan for Ease-Out

Understand the traditional transition back to regular food before beginning.

The Daily Routine

What traditionally repeats each day.

The traditional routine centers on the lemonade mixture throughout the day, alongside other elements historically associated with the Master Cleanse. Each is explained in more detail in its own guide.

The Lemonade

The central mixture, traditionally prepared with fresh lemon juice, pure maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water.

Water

Water is part of the traditional routine and of preparing the mixture itself.

Herbal Tea

Herbal tea is historically referenced as part of the broader Master Cleanse routine.

Salt Water

Salt water is historically associated with some versions of the traditional routine. It is described here for historical and educational context only, and is not presented as necessary or appropriate for everyone.

Practices such as salt water or laxative teas appear in historical descriptions of the Master Cleanse. They are documented here for educational purposes and are not presented as necessary, universally appropriate or medically beneficial. If you have questions about your own circumstances, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional.

Day 1

Before Day 1

What should someone understand before the repeated routine begins?

  1. 01Ingredients are gathered
  2. 02The traditional recipe is understood
  3. 03The repeated daily routine has been reviewed
  4. 04Ease-Out has been reviewed in advance

Days 2–3

Getting familiar with the routine.

Traditional descriptions do not introduce a new formula for Days 2–3. These early days continue the same repeated lemonade routine established on Day 1.

Individual experiences vary widely. First-person accounts on this site are presented as individual experiences rather than indications of what another person should expect.

Days 4–7

The middle of the 10-day process.

The central days continue the same traditional routine. There is no new recipe or separate protocol assigned to each individual day — repetition is the structure.

If questions arise during this period, the Daily Routine and Common Questions sections provide additional context.

Days 8–9

Start thinking about what comes next.

As the cleanse period approaches its end, the next stage of the traditional framework is Ease-Out — the gradual transition back toward regular food.

Reviewing Ease-Out before Day 10 helps make the complete process easier to understand.

Day 10

Completing the traditional cleanse period.

Day 10 marks the end of the commonly referenced 10-day cleanse period, but not the end of the traditional overall framework. What follows is Ease-Out.

Understanding the transition in advance helps connect the cleanse period to the return toward regular food.
