Ohhhh, the yummy salt water flush! This is many times the most difficult part of the Master Cleanse detox. It is also optional as you can drink the Smooth Move tea instead, but I certainly would recommend doing the Salt Water Flush every day the first couple of days. After that you can do the flush every couple of days if you are finding it very unpleasant or difficult (but here’s hoping these Salt Water Flush Tips help you through the process.
How to prepare The Salt Water Flush
Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a solution consisting of :
- Sea Salt – 2 teaspoons
- And Pure Water – 1 quart of warm water
There have been many questions about this process. Many people complain that the SWF doesn’t work for them. This is probably the most common mistake with the master cleanse. I believe it can work for everyone, but there are no absolutes in this world. The key is to adjust the amount of salt in order to create the right solution for your individual needs.
2 Important Tips to make sure you do the Salt Water Flush right
- Make sure you don’t used iodized table salt. NON-iodized sea salt is essential.
- The Salt Water Flush MUST be done on an empty stomach
The Salt Water Flush flushes the whole digestive tract in a way that is very specific and different from the laxative tea. The laxative in a form of tea is necessary every day to allow for the elimination of the toxins from the body. Master Cleanse is all about releasing, so this is very important.

Salt Water Flush Tips to Get it Down and Keep it Down
There are few common tricks to ” getting it down” and here is the list:
- 1. You can try brushing your teeth with a really minty (if posible organic) tooth paste before you drink the mixture. This one works quite well.
- 2. Some people find quite a bit of success with drinking it warm and pretending/ visualizing it’s a chicken broth.
- 3. My personal favourite was having a spoon dipped in maple syrup ready after each time I would take a drink. By licking the spoon a little, my mind would concentrate on the strong flavour of maple syrup and be distracted from the saltiness.
- 4. I also heard about people sipping the salty mixture through a straw.
- 5. You can add a little bit of fresh lemon juice to change the salty taste.

Tips to make the Salt Water Cleanse More Effective
- Take extra water with or without salt. This often increases the activity of the Salt Water Flush. This tip is Stanley approved as it’s his tip found in his original book
- Lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This will help the salt water flow through your colon easier letting gravity lend a hand.
Can I use Epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush?
Some people are using epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush, and I would not recommend that. Here is why: Using Epsom Salt for the SWF can be extremely abrasive to the colon, especially when used daily as recommended on the Master Cleanse.
- Sea salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea water.
- Epsom salt is obtained by chemical process.
- The major component of Epsom salt is magnesium.
- Sea salt contains 98.0 % NaCl (sodium-chloride) + 80 essential elements (2%).

Epsom salts are typically used to relieve sore muscles by soaking in water that has Epsom salt added to it. It is helpful to take Epsom salts bath during the Master Cleanse as it as additional detox for the body and a great way to relax and release some stress at the end of the day.
Epsom Salt Bath: relax and keep hydrated.
Important note! Epsom salts bath can be very dehydrating. Make sure to drink some water before having the bath or sip some nice herbal tea as you relax taking the bath. That is my favourite. I also recommend to have a cold water shower after the bath to wash away the salty water and to rehydrate.
Take it easy and happy cleansing everyone!

My personal SWF success story: I added to the mixture freshly squeezed lemon juice and a little bit of red pepper (the same cayenne I used to prepare the “lemonade”). I was able to drink the whole quart easily and quite quickly, and even enjoyed it! It tasted kind of like Bloody Mary without vodka. How much lemon juice and pepper? Just do it according to your taste. I found that lemon juice and red pepper neutralize the salty taste very well, and the mixture goes down easily.
SWF – I get through it every morning by making two small batches, warm and then I chug. After a few days it seems to get easier. Maybe because I’m used to it, maybe because my taste buds are numbed by the lemon & cayenne…I’m not sure why. But try chugging if you’re having a hard time with it. Good luck!
Third day of lemonade so… 2nd day of swf. I just can’t drink 1 quart… The first time I tried 2tsp in 500ml (17,25oz or 2 cups) at 6:30 am. I managed not to threw up but very difficultly. And I was so full that I had my first lemonade at 10 am. So, I drank lemonade 5 times only… Today I reduced water to 10 oz (still with 2 tsp of salt). I managed to drink it very easily and it seems to be working as well as yesterday. The good thing is that I was able to drink lemonade by 8am and water since then. But I wonder if it’s ok to reduce the quantity of water for the wsf? I hope it is as I drink plenty water in a day (more than 3l) and tea and I do take the laxative at night.
I have found that the easiest way to get the salt water down is to make it the night before in warm water so that the salt will dissolve in the water. Put it in the fridge over night so that first thing in the morning it is really cold. For me the cold drink is WAY easier to get down quickly then the warm salt water.
I have also found a good trick to getting the salt water flush done in the day is to set my alarm in the morning for about an hour and a half before I normally wake up. I jump up and quickly down the sea salt and go back to sleep. When the sea salt is through your body and ready to come out, it will wake you up. The nice thing about this method is that it when it comes out, it comes out quicker with fewer trips to the bathroom, and you don;t waste your waking hours hanging out near the bathroom waiting for it to make it through your system.
Day 2 SWF..first day SWF nothing but belly rumbling but today within 30 min all systems were go! At work and luckily my office is right next to the restroom. Worried now how much time I’m going to spend in there thinking I am going to have to wake up an hour and a half earlier so I can go through this at home next time. Feel sooo full though from the 30oz I don’t know how I’m going to manage the 60oz today of lemonade.
The hunger will hit, but probably not for a while. The swf filled me up for quite a while. If I drank it at 9, I was not hungry till between 1-3 usually. I had a few days where I could only stomach 40 oz though. But I tried for 60-80oz every day. Good luck, And remember… Some days swf will go fast. Some days …later on, will take a bit longer. I had 2 days, day 1 and 7 I believe where I got nothing but the rumbling as well.
So is it best to do the SWF in the morning or evening? And once a day only?
Swf in morning. The tea at night. Just give yourself enough time for swf to get through system. Can take 30 min to a few hours :-)
thanks Tammy..I’ve been doing the swf in the mornings but no tea at night.
Does anyone know if the quantity of water I mix with salt is of any relevance?
I reduced my quantity to half a cup of water and 2tsp of sea salt. I find I can consume the mixture quite easily this way but I don’t wanna mess with the process and would like to know if the copious amounts of water are there strategically or just so the salt water is more dilute and easier to consume (for others)
Thanks!!
Okay everyone :-) I has issues with the swf both times, but follow the directions. The only difference I did was cutting water from 32 so to 28 oz or so, because my stomach could not hold that much water. Day 1 both times I threw up, which is why it’s good to stand over the sink. It was the taste. Day 2 I threw up a little because I could not hold that much liquid. I took the idea that was given on the instructions, to add lemon, which made the whole process so much easier. I did about 2-3 oz of lemon juice and the rest of the 28oz water, with the 2 tsp of sea salt. Try the lemon. By day 8 I could sit on the couch and sip my swf…lol but try to drink it faster than that…lol. Good luck everyone :-)
I warmed up one litre of water in a measuring jug and added a few drops of lemon juice; then took half a cup of slightly warm water from this jug, dissolved two tsp of salt and used a straw — but make sure that you keep the tip of the straw to the back of the tongue — so that I didn’t have to taste the concentrated salt water! Once I finished the salt water, I took a long deep breath and finished the water in the jug in one go — you could do it in two goes! Then take a few deep breaths gently and wait near a toilet for things to happen! I tried different methods and I found this most comfortable and effective! But you have to be highly motivated, for wanting to do it badly!
Good luck!
Getting the two tsp of salt is not the point. You need a mixture of salt and water that brings about the desired “flushing” effect. Altering the amounts somewhat is good, but I would think that much salt in that little water would not do the job, and just add a lot of salt to your system!
I’m on day 5 and have found that dividing the flush is the most effective way to get it down. I have been using four coffee mugs. You put 1/4 teaspoon of the salt into each one and just split your water between them. You can use a little of the syrup to cut the saltiness. I put all four mugs into the microwave together for about 3 minutes….and then chug one after the next. I find this to be much easier (at least it seems so mentally).
DAY 1-SWC: YUCK!! I found that 2 different cups makes it easier. Also heating your water for about a min makes it much easier to consume. Lastly, and I found this to be most helpful, swish fresh COLD water around in your mouth each time after consuming several gulps to make the next few gulps easier!!!
Day 1, Started with SWF, no success. used about 1 and half teaspoon. going to try 1 teaspoon tomorrow. if it doesn’t work in half an hour, I will drink the smooth move tea. then have the lemonade. I find usually 1 teaspoon of salt works best for me, but I tried more this time. I have done the cleanse a few times.
Must be TWO teaspoons (of non-iodized salt) in four cups of water, drunk all at once. Not soup spoons and not eating spoons, but actual measuring spoons. If you don’t have a measuring spoon but have a scale, it’s 13 grams. The very first time you do it it might take a few hours to work, but it will work.
In case you’re still not having luck, go on YouTube and look up “shank prakshalana”. It’s a yoga exercise you do while doing salt water flush that moves the water into your intestines more quickly.
If I did any less than the 2 tsp for 32 oz, it did not work. You should follow directions. Day I and 8 or so had no effect, but all the other Days were fine.
