Ohhhh, the yummy salt water flush! This is many times the most difficult part of the Master Cleanse detox. It is also optional as you can drink the Smooth Move tea instead, but I certainly would recommend doing the Salt Water Flush every day the first couple of days. After that you can do the flush every couple of days if you are finding it very unpleasant or difficult (but here’s hoping these Salt Water Flush Tips help you through the process.
How to prepare The Salt Water Flush
Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a solution consisting of :
- Sea Salt – 2 teaspoons
- And Pure Water – 1 quart of warm water
There have been many questions about this process. Many people complain that the SWF doesn’t work for them. This is probably the most common mistake with the master cleanse. I believe it can work for everyone, but there are no absolutes in this world. The key is to adjust the amount of salt in order to create the right solution for your individual needs.
2 Important Tips to make sure you do the Salt Water Flush right
- Make sure you don’t used iodized table salt. NON-iodized sea salt is essential.
- The Salt Water Flush MUST be done on an empty stomach
The Salt Water Flush flushes the whole digestive tract in a way that is very specific and different from the laxative tea. The laxative in a form of tea is necessary every day to allow for the elimination of the toxins from the body. Master Cleanse is all about releasing, so this is very important.

Salt Water Flush Tips to Get it Down and Keep it Down
There are few common tricks to ” getting it down” and here is the list:
- 1. You can try brushing your teeth with a really minty (if posible organic) tooth paste before you drink the mixture. This one works quite well.
- 2. Some people find quite a bit of success with drinking it warm and pretending/ visualizing it’s a chicken broth.
- 3. My personal favourite was having a spoon dipped in maple syrup ready after each time I would take a drink. By licking the spoon a little, my mind would concentrate on the strong flavour of maple syrup and be distracted from the saltiness.
- 4. I also heard about people sipping the salty mixture through a straw.
- 5. You can add a little bit of fresh lemon juice to change the salty taste.

Tips to make the Salt Water Cleanse More Effective
- Take extra water with or without salt. This often increases the activity of the Salt Water Flush. This tip is Stanley approved as it’s his tip found in his original book
- Lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This will help the salt water flow through your colon easier letting gravity lend a hand.
Can I use Epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush?
Some people are using epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush, and I would not recommend that. Here is why: Using Epsom Salt for the SWF can be extremely abrasive to the colon, especially when used daily as recommended on the Master Cleanse.
- Sea salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea water.
- Epsom salt is obtained by chemical process.
- The major component of Epsom salt is magnesium.
- Sea salt contains 98.0 % NaCl (sodium-chloride) + 80 essential elements (2%).

Epsom salts are typically used to relieve sore muscles by soaking in water that has Epsom salt added to it. It is helpful to take Epsom salts bath during the Master Cleanse as it as additional detox for the body and a great way to relax and release some stress at the end of the day.
Epsom Salt Bath: relax and keep hydrated.
Important note! Epsom salts bath can be very dehydrating. Make sure to drink some water before having the bath or sip some nice herbal tea as you relax taking the bath. That is my favourite. I also recommend to have a cold water shower after the bath to wash away the salty water and to rehydrate.
Take it easy and happy cleansing everyone!

I started the SWF recently, and I have to admit I was hesitant at first. I really thought it was all a hoax. But after trying it out, wow!!! Boy did it work. But I did twist it up a bit. I only use about half of the water amount and added the 2tsp of sea salt. With the other remaining water I squeezed half of a lemon. I drink as much of the salt water fist, then chase it with the lemon water. Alternating every time. And after I while, Bam! The results kicked in. This works for me. (I tried the whole 1qt of water and sea salt, and just could not drink the solution.)
I would love to complete the Master Cleanse, unfortunately I have gout and fasting in such a manner will very likely cause another episode. For those not aware, gout is a painful episode occurring in the joints due to a build up of uric acid crystals. It has been well documented that fasting will aggravate the production of uric acid and lead to another flare. During my attack last week, my wife asked how are you doing and I responded that I want to die. A benefit of the cleanse would be to rid my body of the present uric acid crystals, at this point I’ll try anything (with the exception of fasting).
Please advise if there is some variation of the lemonade cleanse to get me to the salt portion? Or, if someone with experience or medical knowledge would strongly advise not starting this due to the aforementioned information. Any help is highly appreciated!
Day 2: I waited an hour after doing the salt water flush and nothing.. I dewcided to take a warm/hot bath for 10 minutes. 5 minutes after my bath it worked! Try it!
I personally use PH-saltas (by dr. Young, they taste better) instead of sea salt. Also I mix them into a 1,5 leters of mineral-water (soda-water). I’ve noticed that mineral water hides the taste of the salt. This way it is as drinking mineral-water and nothing else. This mixture works for me and cleanses my bowell in half an hour!

What I found to work for me when drinking the mixture was to actually use a small cup (6-8 oz) to dissolve the salt in and drink that at once. And then just drink down the remainder of the water. I felt it worked just as good.
Would there be any reason that I would want to do that? I felt it gave me the same affect as drinking it all salted.
Any thoughts?
If it works for you then I don’t see any reason not to do it.
Ease-in Day 1 – I’ve cleansed a number of times in the past and can testify it really works – especially the first time. It is true that when you feel and look your worst – aches & pains, fatigue, pasty gray skin, dull hair & eyes – that is when your body is working hard at cleansing. If you get to the point of passing mucus it is really amazing that you suddenly feel wonderful and hair, skin & eyes are bright & shiney. This is the first time I’ve cleansed in a couple of years; since I’ve been eating a more healthful diet I’ve felt less of a need.
Tips for SWF – Use A&D or other diaper rash cream to avoid burn and keep a stack of magazines in the bathroom…
Thank you Kristen, too. This is the second time I’m doing the fast – first time was 33 days, this time I’m aiming for 35 days and I’m on day 3. I always gag during the SWF. The only way the first time I tried got it down was doing it once every few days and then I substituted the SWF for the laxative tea, but with Kristen’s advice, I tried it today with the shot glass of 2T salt with water and then chased it down with the rest of the water, lukewarm, and it worked amazingly.
I havnt started yet but i am going to very soon, i was just wonderinf, do i need to do the SWF everyday once i start the Master cleansing diet or after im done with it?? ans alos, how long does this diet go on for? Like, can we go for as long as we want or is there a limit?
That’s how I do it too! Nasty stuff!
You said 2T but you mean 2t right?
Is the Salt Water Flush absolutely neccessary for success on the Master Cleanse or could you use an alternative laxative such as MiraLAX?
Can the SWF be done in the evening?!? My challenge is I begin work at 7:30 every morning and it seems from my research that this whole process takes at least 2 hours. How long before does it take you to not be running to the bathroom or have a private one near by?? I’d rather not do the cleanse any differently than outlined in the book, so what are your thoughts on doing the tea in the morning and the SWF in the evening?
SWF: I have done the MC a few times – this will be my 5th time. One time I read a tip and it is the ONLY way I can get the SWF down – Put the 1T of salt in a very small juice glass of warm water – slam it like a shot with your nose plugged then immediately chase it with the quart of warm water (as warm as you can stand it). It is the only way I can get it down and works every single time for me. Good luck!
Kristen, that is a very good tip! I’ll try it tomorow. Thank you!
