Ohhhh, the yummy salt water flush! This is many times the most difficult part of the Master Cleanse detox. It is also optional as you can drink the Smooth Move tea instead, but I certainly would recommend doing the Salt Water Flush every day the first couple of days. After that you can do the flush every couple of days if you are finding it very unpleasant or difficult (but here’s hoping these Salt Water Flush Tips help you through the process.
How to prepare The Salt Water Flush
Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a solution consisting of :
- Sea Salt – 2 teaspoons
- And Pure Water – 1 quart of warm water
There have been many questions about this process. Many people complain that the SWF doesn’t work for them. This is probably the most common mistake with the master cleanse. I believe it can work for everyone, but there are no absolutes in this world. The key is to adjust the amount of salt in order to create the right solution for your individual needs.
2 Important Tips to make sure you do the Salt Water Flush right
- Make sure you don’t used iodized table salt. NON-iodized sea salt is essential.
- The Salt Water Flush MUST be done on an empty stomach
The Salt Water Flush flushes the whole digestive tract in a way that is very specific and different from the laxative tea. The laxative in a form of tea is necessary every day to allow for the elimination of the toxins from the body. Master Cleanse is all about releasing, so this is very important.

Salt Water Flush Tips to Get it Down and Keep it Down
There are few common tricks to ” getting it down” and here is the list:
- 1. You can try brushing your teeth with a really minty (if posible organic) tooth paste before you drink the mixture. This one works quite well.
- 2. Some people find quite a bit of success with drinking it warm and pretending/ visualizing it’s a chicken broth.
- 3. My personal favourite was having a spoon dipped in maple syrup ready after each time I would take a drink. By licking the spoon a little, my mind would concentrate on the strong flavour of maple syrup and be distracted from the saltiness.
- 4. I also heard about people sipping the salty mixture through a straw.
- 5. You can add a little bit of fresh lemon juice to change the salty taste.

Tips to make the Salt Water Cleanse More Effective
- Take extra water with or without salt. This often increases the activity of the Salt Water Flush. This tip is Stanley approved as it’s his tip found in his original book
- Lie on your right side for 30 minutes. This will help the salt water flow through your colon easier letting gravity lend a hand.
Can I use Epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush?
Some people are using epsom salts for the Salt Water Flush, and I would not recommend that. Here is why: Using Epsom Salt for the SWF can be extremely abrasive to the colon, especially when used daily as recommended on the Master Cleanse.
- Sea salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea water.
- Epsom salt is obtained by chemical process.
- The major component of Epsom salt is magnesium.
- Sea salt contains 98.0 % NaCl (sodium-chloride) + 80 essential elements (2%).

I hope that helps our readers to make an educated decision. Click here to see an article about the Sea salt we recommend on our website.
Epsom salts are typically used to relieve sore muscles by soaking in water that has Epsom salt added to it. It is helpful to take Epsom salts bath during the Master Cleanse as it as additional detox for the body and a great way to relax and release some stress at the end of the day.
Epsom Salt Bath: relax and keep hydrated.
Important note! Epsom salts bath can be very dehydrating. Make sure to drink some water before having the bath or sip some nice herbal tea as you relax taking the bath. That is my favourite. I also recommend to have a cold water shower after the bath to wash away the salty water and to rehydrate.
Take it easy and happy cleansing everyone!

Day one is not starting off so good. All of my salt water just came back up. Still going to start the lemonade. Wish me luck :)
Do it on an empty stomach or you will most likely throw up. Just some advice.
Well I’m about half way through day one of the master cleanse and so far finding it very easy….reading this post and watching the video beforehand prepared we a little for the salt water flush and I must say I didn’t find it half as bad as I thought it would be! Sure it’s not the most pleasant tasting concoction but I was more worried about whether it would work or not and thankfully for me it worked perfectly :) I’m looking forward to what the rest of the days will bring for me! Good luck to all :)
Salt & Stevia Water Flush
1 tbsp himalayan salt & 1 tbsp of stevia mixed around until dissolved in 2 L of ozonated distilled water, wait for the bubbles to go down and check if it has been mixed properly, then add in another 2 L of ozonated distilled water, mix it around again, for a total of: 4 L of H2O, 1 tbsp himalayan salt, & 1 tbsp of stevia
For the flush, drink 2 L of the mix within 20 minutes, then jump up and down to mix it around in the digestive system, and then wait about 25-45 min before going to the washroom (having H2O by itself off to the side if you feel like it), but don’t force yourself to wait for the 25-45 min if you feel you cannot wait that long.
Repeat the process again with the other 2 litres sometime during the same day.
Unless you are constipated, make sure to do the flush sometime after your 1st bowel movement of the day (not before your 1st bowel movement of the day).
make sure to keep in any flatulence until on the toilet just in case (or else…), and also make sure you’re at home near a toilet for the whole day when doing this flush
I like to use a straw, the biggest, fattest straw you can find. I put the straw as far back in my mouth as I can to go right past the taste buds. I can get the entire quart down in about 30 seconds
You’re a champ! I just did my first one ever and it took me 8 minutes trying as hard as I could – Hopefully I can get it down faster tomorrow!
I use a bottle that i can squeeze. I had on old 2 liter seltzer water bottle. I fill it half way add the salt and shake. then when I am drinking it i can squeeze the bottle to shoot the water into me, don’t forget to swallow!
My trick for doing the Salt Water Cleanse is halving the amount of water I’m supposed to drink. One half is salt water I take in 1/2-1 cup increments over the sink (just in case), then the other half is a very strong brew of green tea (I drink it chilled after steeping, while the salt water is room temperature).
The green tea helps with flushing out toxins AND if you use REAL green tea it has such a strong, somewhat bitter flavor (that I personally love) that completely cuts the salt water flavor from your mouth. Personally Chinese or Japanese green tea leaves are the best to consume. NOT Lipton, but organic green leaves from Japan are the best.
Green Tea naturally helps eliminate toxins, helps flush out organs, and is high in antioxidants and can help cleanse the liver. Its a cancer preventative, lowers cholesterol, and can give people who are trying to wean themselves off of high-caffeine diets a way of transitioning to a much lower caffeine intake (with a lower chance of those really painful caffeine-headaches as your body detoxes the residual caffeine build-up from your body).
Today is day 1 of the diet. I’ve misread the ingredients and used 2 tablespoons of salt instead of 2 teaspoons. Man that was hard to drink. Very salty. Anyway it flushed like a charm. I’ll use teaspoons tomorrow :)
AH i did that too!! i didnt finish the last cup because i felt i was going to throw up. That was a mistake i hope to never make again. but now that i know it could never be as salty as the first day with 2 tablespoons luckily the next few days will be fine.
How ever i wonder how bad it is to have 2 Tablespoons of salt, considering thats how much i should have had in 3 days.
Can I add 2tsp of salt and 64oz of water?
Thanks so much for posting this video. I tried the Master Cleanse a couple of years back and could not make myself do the SWF after the first day. I realize now why it is important, and watching you grimace but “just do it” was very inspirational to me, so thank you!
