Master Cleanse Ingredients

The Master Cleanse is powerful in its simplicity in both process and ingredients. Although very few ingredients are required, the quality of the ingredients is critical. Each and every one of the Master Cleanse Ingredients should be organic grade, ripe, locally sourced, and unrefined without any preservatives. This can make for a challenge to keep your fresh lemons fresh, as organic lemons go bad faster, but with a few of the following tips in mind, you should be able to get through your 10 day lemon cleanse with a big smile knowing you’re losing weight while feeling great!




The point is to remove chemicals from your system, to eliminate toxins. Your common sense should tell you that canned lemon juice does not have the same nutritional content as fresh squeezed. It should also tell you that organic is free from chemicals and pesticides. The maple syrup will need to be full of nutrients too, and this means no Aunt Je-my-god-this-is-so-refined-sugary-crap maple syrup. Get whole foods. Unrefined foods.

The diet itself is also simple and requires only five ingredients. You will want to make sure you have at least several days worth of supplies. I have been caught without maple syrup before and have had to make a dash for a whole foods retailer late one night. This is your nourishment, and simply, if you don’t have it you can’t eat, so be prepared. I shop for a whole week. That can be up to 20 lemons, and 1 liter of maple syrup. Fresh Lemons are Critical for their Enzymes

When digested, the lemon alkalizes the body. Lemon is a natural cleansing agent for the body, as it brakes and loosens mucus to be eliminated.
Lemon also contains:
  • many minerals and vitamins – C, B-5, B-6
  • digestive enzymes

How many lemons will I need for 10 days of Lemonade diet?

If you buy 50 lemons in advance, as most people do, store 40 in the fridge at a time and take the 10 most ripe lemons out for your first day or two. NOTE : Store your lemons on the counter to ripen, NOT in the fridge. Enzymes are dormant in the fridge. You want those enzymes.

Rich Maple Syrup is Nutrient Dense and Low Glycemic

  • This is the ingredient in the Master Cleanse that will provide you with the calories and the energy to to fuel your body during the cleanse.
  • Maple Syrup was chosen by Stanley Burroughs for specific reasons (as was every other ingredient –Fresh Lemon Juice, Cayenne Pepper and Pure Water). It was chosen because it is a very high quality, concentrated source of energy when consumed in its purest state (as close to right-from-the-tree as possible) and is packed full of: nutrients, minerals and vitamins.   • THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT : There are generally 4 grades of Maple syrup. You can also see this grading expressed in the different colours of Maple syrup available on the market. Grade B is actually the highest quality of syrup for the Master Cleanse, and the best choice possible. If it is not available for you, get the darkest grade you can.

Maple syrup provides nutrients, calories and energy

1 Tablespoon of Maple Syrup provides about 55 calories. Since we aim to average 8 glasses of Lemonade each day, we will consume 880 calories each day alone from Maple Syrup (8 glasses x 2 Tablespoons x 55 calories). There are 4 calories in each Tablespoon of Fresh Lemon Juice. That provides a daily calorie intake of 944 calories.

Inevitably someone always asks what an acceptable substitute might be. I will list the most common ones, but let me be clear: RICH MAPLE SYRUP IS BEST :)

  3. Blackstrap Molasses – An alternative For Diabetics.

Cayenne Pepper (The Master Herb)

Cayenne Pepper is so critical to The Master Cleanse and Lemonade Diet that it is sometimes called the Cayenne Pepper Diet. There is no doubt that cayenne pepper is a Super Food.

Cayenne Pepper is a vegetable and we get our powder for The Lemonade Diet from grinding up a dried specific type of red pepper. Still, many refer to cayenne pepper as an herb. In fact, herbologist and herbalists say that Cayenne Pepper is The Master Herb. Perhaps this is where Stanley Burroughs came up with the name “The Master Cleanser.”

Cayenne Pepper has many wonderful properties:

What about distilled water?

Stanley Burroughs – The Master Cleanse founder, did not recommend using distilled water. He called it was “cooked” – completely stripped of natural minerals found in water.It is also slightly acidic.

Essential Equipment (Your Master Cleanse Kit)

To complete the diet, very little in terms of equipment or apparatus is required. All items are small, taking up very little space in your cupboard and counter. They are all simple and easy to clean, and should not provide you with any excuses for not starting.

    Is it OK to prepare the whole days worth or even 2 days worth a head of time?

    I am a med student and having read through the information on this website, am quite alarmed. Your body requires vital proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals on a daily basis, which this so called ‘cleanse’ cuts out completely.

    Be aware that none of the claims on this website seem to be based on research or evidence. For example the claim that lemons will “alkalise your body”? Firstly the blood is slightly alkaline anyway, with a pH of 7.35-7.45 under normal conditions. Secondly lemons contain citric acid, with a pH of approximately 2. And finally no matter how much acidic/alkaline food you eat, you will not change your blood’s pH. Various buffering systems exist within the body to maintain it within the range of pH 7.35-7.45. This is the range inside which the enzymes and proteins within our bodies function correctly and therefore is the pH range compatible with life.

    Furthermore, when we stop eating, the body goes into a thrifty storage mode to conserve energy, such that when you start eating again, it be more likely to store the energy we take in from our food as fat.

    So let’s all use our common sense and be critical for a minute. To, lose body fat and, more importantly, be healthy, the best diet to choose is a healthy one, low in refined sugars, containing all the recommended nutrients our bodies need, whilst doing plenty of exercise; basically the sure fire way to slim down since the beginning of time.

      Hi,

      Common sense, is often not sufficient. In fact, educated sense is often blinded by their education on one track. One takes a few classes and then thinks they know it all. The “Thrifty storage mode” has been shown to be more “Thrifty cleansing mode” of autophagy. Spend 100 hours researching fasting and the hundreds of studies to show its’ benefits to balance your knowledge derived “common” education system classes. Avante guarde thinking is where the deeper knowledge lies. Seek vast and varied sources of knowledge in your practice and you will serve the world well. What’s more, everything present here is with the understanding it could be proved false one day or even in opposing “studies”. What’s important is to abandon the notion that science is ever “settled”. This is absolutely anathema to the meaning of science. Lastly, it’s interesting you mention the beginning of time (which is when functional fasting was invented). It’s practice is documented throughout history in most complex organisms (animals) including humans. True, a healthy diet is the baseline goal. Fasting is a technique that acts as a catalyst towards healing, change.

      And As a pre med student, common sense, how many hours of nutrition have you taken. Most doctors (who are often very good at what they do) only take about 8 credit hour of nutrition. This does not make you an expert in nutrition. I do agree that the best way to lose weight is to eat properly (can you common sense provide me with a diet proper for my bodies condition?) but a cleanse removes all the garbage we have dumped into our system (pizza, Big Mac, Jack in the Box, etc.) as well as the chemicals that accompany the foods we consume. To be a good doctor you need to gain a little humility after all like many doctors you are not god.

    Kimber, it should be easy enough to cut the lemons in half and squeeze them, perhaps remove the seeds first. You will be able to get enough juice out this way, but I would not advise to use bottled lemon juice. Or just go buy a hand-held juicer, they are small and cheap.

    Hey everyone, Happy New Year. First time doing the cleanse and have a quick question. I am on day 5 of a planned 10 day cleanse; when will my tongue turn pink again? It is covered in a thick white paste that I can actually scrape off with my teeth. It is GROSS.

      This is totally normal. The white stuff should be clear or significantly reduced by day 10. It’s your body detoxing. Supposedly, you’re supposed to keep on the master cleanse until all the white stuff is gone off your tongue. I chose to go an extra 2 days after the 10 because I still had some white. It was all gone by day 12 for me, which meant my body had successfully rid itself of all toxins. I find oil pulling help so much with speeding up this process. You basically slowly swish organic UNtoasted sesame oil or organic coconut oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes, first thing in the morning, before you drink water or brush your teeth. Good luck on your journey!
